1970 Victorian State Election
The 1970 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 30 May 1970, was for the 45th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect the 73 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 18 members of the 36-member Legislative Council. The incumbent Liberal government led by Henry Bolte was returned for a sixth term with a slightly reduced majority. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. Edward Wallace Lewis (born 24 December 1936) is an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney, and was a shearer and farmer before entering politics. He travelled widely before settling in Hamilton around 1963, becoming secretary of the local branch of the Australian Workers' Union and president of the Hamilton Labor Party branch. Electoral District Of Lowan
The electoral district of Lowan is a rural Victorian Legislative Assembly (Lower House) electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It is located within the Western Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. It was initially created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. It is the state’s biggest electorate by area, covering about 41,858 km². Lowan includes the country towns of Casterton, Coleraine, Dartmoor, Dimboola, Hamilton, Horsham, Jeparit, Kaniva, Nhill and Rainbow. The current seat was established in 2002 although several previous seats held the same name. The current member is The Nationals' Emma Kealy. Esmond Curnow
Esmond Julian Curnow (born 27 October 1946) is an Australian politician. He was born in Bendigo to factory manager Thomas William Curnow and Esma Jean Cook. He attended Bendigo High School and became the manager of a bedding store. He joined the Labor Party in 1962 and was a member of the Castlemaine and Moonee Ponds branches. In 1970 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Kara Kara, serving until his seat was abolished in 1976. After leaving politics he became a publican, and also the secretary of the Bendigo Trades Hall Council from 1981 to 1983. Bill Phelan
William Phelan (16 July 1915 – 22 December 1973) was an Australian politician. He was born in Maryborough to ironmonger Sydney Clifford Phelan and Letitia Ellen Chellew. He attended the local high school and on 22 October 1938 married Hazel Patten, with whom he had four children. He worked in the family firm and in 1939 succeeded his father as managing director. He expanded the firm until in 1950 it was the largest in Maryborough. From 1944 to 1961 he served on Maryborough Council, with a term as mayor from 1954 to 1955. Bob Fell
Robert William Fell (5 April 1930 – 28 September 2009) was an Australian politician. Biography Robert William Fell was born in Melbourne to fitter and turner Arthur Erwin Fell and Stella May. He was a construction manager before entering politics, and served in the Citizen Military Forces from 1948 to 1950. On 23 February 1952 he married Dorothy Helen Finlay, with whom he had four children. He was a member of Diamond Valley Shire Council from 1964, serving as president from 1968 to 1969 and from 1976 to 1977. In 1970 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Greensborough, but he was defeated in 1973 by only five votes. Fell appealed to the Court of Disputed Returns and succeeded in overturning the election result, but lost the resulting by-election by a larger margin. Roy Mountford "Monte" Vale (12 September 1912 – 10 September 1977) was an Australian politician. He was born in Foster to schoolteacher William Mountford Vale and Flora Ethel Reddick. He attended state schools before studying at Melbourne Teachers' College and becoming a teacher from 1934. In 1949 he became seriously ill and lost a leg to amputation. He then worked as a laboratory assistant for Australian Paper Manufacturers. Vale was a member of a political family; his great grandfather William Vale and his great grand-uncle Richard Vale were both members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Robert Roy Cameron "Rob" Maclellan AM (born 8 March 1934) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, representing the seats of Gippsland West (1970–76), Berwick (1976–92) and Pakenham (1992–2002). He was Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party from 1982 to 1985. Background Maclellan was born in Melbourne to businessman Roy James Maclellan and Amy Catherine McMicking. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and received a Bachelor of Law from Melbourne University in 1966. He has also studied history at La Trobe University. Leslie Cochrane
Leslie James Cochrane (29 August 1894 – 25 April 1972) was an Australian politician. He was born in East Brighton to gardener David Cochrane and Lucy Harriett Burgess. He moved to Caldermeade with his family at the age of eight, and served with the AIF in World War I on the Western Front, where he was seriously wounded. As a soldier settler he was granted land at Kooweerup, where he became a dairy farmer. In December 1919 he married Ivy Mary Wildes, with whom he had two children. He served on Cranbourne Shire Council from 1930 to 1964, with four terms as president (1935–36, 1946, 1949–50, 1957–58).
