Ugandan Super League
The Ugandan Premier League, also known as the StarTimes Uganda Premier League for sponsorship reasons, is the top division of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations. The league was previously known as the Uganda Super League but changed in the 2014–15 season after new management taking over. The league's roots date back to 1968 when the National First Division League was established. History Original concept The genesis of club football in Uganda was an idea copied from England by Balamaze Lwanga and Polycarp Kakooza. The objective was to improve Uganda's performances in the Africa Cup of Nations after disappointing results in the finals in 1962 Africa Cup of Nations, 1962 (fourth-place finish) and 1968 Africa Cup of Nations, 1968 (lost all three group stage matches), both held in Ethiopia. Maroons FC, also known as Prisons FC, is a Ugandan professional football club from Kampala owned by Uganda Prisons Service, currently playing in the Uganda Premier League. Playing as Prisons FC, the club won the first two Ugandan Super League championships in 1968 and 1969 and made the quarterfinals of the 1970 African Cup of Champions Clubs, losing 6–2 on aggregate to Egypt's Ismaily. Express Football Club (abbreviated as Express) is a Ugandan professional football (soccer), football club from Kampala. The club previously played their home games at the Muteesa II Stadium, Muteesa II Wankulukuku Stadium,but recently shifted to the newly renovated Hamz Stadium,Nakivubo. History Express FC is popularly referred to by the club fans as the Red Eagles and has also been known as the Express Sports Club. The club is one of the oldest football clubs in Uganda, having been founded in October 1957 by managers of the Uganda Express Newspapers. The main architect of the club's foundation was Jolly Joe Kiwanuka, the owner of the newspaper, who was ably supported by Paul Ssengendo, Hannington Kiwanuka, Dr. Banabas Kiwanuka, Gaster Nsubuga and Bishop Dr. Dunstan Nsubuga. Mbarara United Football Club was a Ugandan football club located in Mbarara, Mbarara District in Western Uganda. The club played in the Ugandan Big League in the 2009–10 season but there is currently no FUFA records that confirm that the club is still operating.
