1967 Victorian State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 29 April 1967 to elect the 73 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 18 members of the 36-member Legislative Council. Since the previous election, the number of Legislative Assembly electorates had been increased from 66 to 73, and the number of members in the Legislative Council had been increased from 34 to 35. The incumbent Liberal Party government, led by Premier Henry Bolte Sir Henry Edward Bolte GCMG (20 May 1908 – 4 January 1990) was an Australian politician who served as the 38th Premier of Victoria. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. Electoral District Of Lowan
The electoral district of Lowan is a rural Victorian Legislative Assembly (Lower House) electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It is located within the Western Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. It was initially created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. It is the state’s biggest electorate by area, covering about 41,858 km². Lowan includes the country towns of Casterton, Coleraine, Dartmoor, Dimboola, Hamilton, Horsham, Jeparit, Kaniva, Nhill and Rainbow. The current seat was established in 2002 although several previous seats held the same name. The current member is The Nationals' Emma Kealy. Len Reid
Leonard Stanley Reid, (21 September 1916 – 22 April 2003) was an Australian fighter pilot and politician who represented the Liberal Party as a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and the Australian House of Representatives. Reid served as a fighter pilot in both the Royal Australian Air Force and on attachment to the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 4 December 1942. After the war, he ran a dairy farm in Cranbourne, Victoria before being elected to the Electoral district of Dandenong at the 1958 Victorian state election. Reid served as the member for Dandenong for 11 years, before resigning his seat to contest the newly created federal Division of Holt, which covered much of the same area as Dandenong, at the 1969 federal election. The electoral district of Dandenong is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first proclaimed in 1904 when the district of Dandenong and Berwick was abolished. The district is located within the outskirts of Melbourne's south-east, containing both residential and industrial areas, as well as the Armada Dandenong Plaza and Churchill National Park. William McDonald (Australian Politician)
Sir William John Farquhar "Black Jack" McDonald (3 October 1911 – 13 September 1995) was an Australian politician. He was born at Binnum in South Australia to grazier John Nicholson McDonald and Sarah McInnes, and attended the local state school and then Scotch College in Adelaide. He was a grazier in South Australia from 1930, moving to a sheep station near Neuarpurr in Victoria in 1935. On 15 August 1935 he married Evelyn Margaret Koch, with whom he had two daughters. He served with the AIF in World War II, and after his return served on Kowree Shire Council from 1946 to 1961 (president 1948–49). A member of the Liberal and Country Party, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1947 for Dundas. Defeated in 1952, he was re-elected in 1955 and elected Speaker. Archie Tanner
Archie Lionel Tanner (18 April 1908 – 23 August 1975) was an Australian politician. He was born in Beverley in Western Australia to publican Edgar Tanner and Emily Prosser. His family moved to Victoria and he attended All Saints Grammar School in St Kilda before becoming an accountant with the Commercial Bank of Australia. On 3 June 1933, he married Edna May Smith, with whom he had two daughters. During World War II, he served with the Royal Australian Air Force. Tanner was a lightweight amateur boxing champion, and was a referee at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, Rome in 1960, Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico City in 1968, as well as at the Commonwealth Games in Perth in 1962 and Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966. In 1967 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Morwell, but he was defeated in 1970. He returned to banking and retired in 1973. Robert Hugh Trethewey (17 October 1902 – 31 May 1989) was an Australian politician. He was born in Eaglehawk to mining engine driver Robert Hugh Trethewey and Louise Turnbull. He received his education at Eaglehawk State School, at Bendigo High School, and at Bendigo Business College. In 1918 he commenced work for the New Zealand Insurance Company (NZI). On 16 October 1926 he married Isabella Nancarrow, with whom he had two sons. Tom Edmunds
Cyril Thomas Edmunds (24 October 1925 – 2 February 2003) was an Australian politician. He was born in Essendon to plumber Cyril Edmunds and Gertrude Victoria Jeffreys. He attended local state schools and served in the Royal Australian Air Force from 1943 to 1945, as a coxswain in the South Pacific Air Sea Rescue Service. On his return he became a lithographer, managing a printing factory. On 14 June 1952 he married Vivienne Amy Ballantine; they had three children. In 1952 he joined the Labor Party, and held several local offices. In 1967 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Moonee Ponds; he would serve until 1988, transferring to Ascot Vale in 1976 and Pascoe Vale in 1988. Jack Holden (politician)
Jack Bruce Holden (10 April 1921 – 6 February 2002) was an Australian politician. He was born in Moonee Ponds to produce merchant John Henry Holden and Ada Wanstall. He attended University High School and became a clerk with the Customs Department in 1935. During World War II he served with the Royal Australian Air Force. On 5 November 1943 he married Lisbeth Gilbertson Hutton, with whom he had three children; this marriage was later dissolved. After the war he succeeded his father as proprietor of the family produce firm. In 1955 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal and Country Party member for Moonee Ponds. He served until his defeat in 1967. He was subsequently a partner in an architects' firm, and on 11 June 1976 married Shirley Heather Dawn, who predeceased him.
