Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Sidsel Endresen
Sidsel Endresen (born 19 June 1952) is a Norwegian singer, composer, and actress. She was part of the Jon Eberson group. Since 1987, Endresen has pursued a successful solo career, recording for ECM. Career Endresen was one of the most pronounced female jazz musicians in Norway in the beginning of the 21st century. She is a versatile artist, who likes to challenge her voice with new experimental forms and combination of jazz and other artistic expressions. Her work has moved from "fusion" and "chamber jazz" in the 1980s and 1990s, to improvisational "new" musical forms in the mid 1990s until today. She has also moved from larger formats to explore solo, duo and trio formats. The last 15 years have her work mainly been concentrated on the genre of free improvisation music, both as a performer and as composer. Jon Laukvik
Jon Laukvik (born 16 December 1952, in Oslo) is a Norwegian organist. Laukvik studied church music, organ and piano in Oslo. Afterwards, he worked with Michael Schneider and Hugo Ruf in Cologne and Marie-Claire Alain in Paris. In 1980, he was appointed professor of organ at the ''Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst'' in Stuttgart. In 2001, he was appointed professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. Ole Thomsen
Ole Thomsen (born 28 November 1952 in Bergen, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (guitar) and composer, known from a number of releases and since 1977 central on the Bergen jazz scene. (in Norwegian) He is the older brother of another Bergen Guitarist, Kåre Thomsen. Career The Jazz fusion inspired Thomson has contributed on at least 19 releases, such as in ''The Gambian/Norwegian Friendship Orchestra'', Orchestra Ny Bris with Olav Dale, Per Jørgensen, Frank Jakobsen, Kåre Garnes og Dag Arnesen and ''Thomsens Loosebox'' with Ivar Kolve, Stein Inge Brækhus and Yngve Moe. Carl Haakon Waadeland
Carl Haakon Waadeland (born 8 November 1952) is a Norwegian musicologist and jazz drummer, known from several bands and releases such as with Dadafon, Dum Dum Boys, Åge & Sambandet, Halvdan Sivertsen, Warne Marsh, Kenny Wheeler, Annbjørg Lien, Henning Sommerro, Bjørn Alterhaug, John Pål Inderberg, Knutsen & Ludvigsen, Mikis Theodorakis and Arja Saijonmaa. He was one of the driving forces behind the jazz program at NTNU which he also directed. Career Waadeland holds a master's degree in mathematics and PhD in music theory from the NTNU, where he concentrates on rhythm, swing, music performance (performologi), rhythm and movement, as a professor of Music. In his PhD thesis he developed simulation models of rhythm abnormalities (2000). Øyvind Rauset
Øyvind Rauset (born October 3, 1952) is a Norwegian artist, musician and composer. Rauset was born in Oslo, the son of Per Rauset from Gloppen and Mary Lyngmo from Rossfjordstraumen. He studied at the Art Academy of Oslo and Østlandets Music Conservatory. He was a violinist in two famous folk rock bands from Norway, '' Folque'' and ''Ym-Stammen'', but is more widely known for his own music on the two albums ''Landscape With Two Figures'' (with British songwriter Richard James Burgess, 1982) and ''13 Impossible Dances + 1 Improbable'' (1988, revised 1992). He has also made music for TV programs in the NRK1 (The Norwegian Broadcasting). In April 2002 he was featured guest in the talk show "Stereo" (NRK1+2). Finn Sletten (born 11 August 1952) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums and percussions). Career Sletten was born in Bodø. After a study tour to Arizona (1968–70), he played in his home town with such musicians as Paul Weeden Band at Festival of North Norway (1972) and an album (1974). In Oslo he participated in Magni Wentzel Quintet, including Jon Eberson (guitar), Tore Brunborg (saxophone) and Jon Balke (keyboards) among others.
