West Of Scotland District (rugby Union)
West of Scotland District is a select provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players from the West of Scotland. Founded in 1876, the West of Scotland District team - and its corresponding East of Scotland District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. This was meant as an impetus to include players from beyond the original Glasgow District and Edinburgh District catchment areas. The West of Scotland District versus the East of Scotland District became the de facto trial match for the Scotland international team. It survives today, but only for age-grade. It is occasionally known as the Glasgow-Edinburgh District side. Founded in 1893, the Cities District team - and its corresponding Provinces District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. History Formation To include other players when selecting the international team, the Cities v Provinces District match was introduced by the Scottish Rugby Union in the 1893–94 season. Donny Innes (16 September 1917 – 21 January 2012) was a Scotland international rugby union player and a doctor who worked as a general practitioner (GP). Early life Innes was born on 16 September 1917 in Aberdeen Scotland. His father was a physician and his mother a GP. Rugby Union career Amateur career While studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen, he played for the Aberdeen University rugby union side. His pre-war Scotland caps came with the university side. He played for Aberdeen GSFP. He was a notable rugby sevens player and led the Co-Optimists to victory in the Murrayfield Sevens tournament in 1939. He played sevens with Aberdeen Nomads that same year. Hillhead Rugby Football Club is a former rugby union football club based in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1904 as a club for former pupils of Hillhead High School, it lasted until 1988 when it merged with Jordanhill RFC to form Hillhead Jordanhill RFC. Foundation as a Sports Club Hillhead Sports Club was formed in 1902 as a private club for former pupils of Hillhead High School, catering for various sports including football, cricket, hockey and athletics. Rugby and Scotstoun A rugby team, Hillhead High School Former Pupils RFC, was formed in 1904. The club used the Scotstoun Showgrounds as a home until 1922. The Durham County Rugby Football Union is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the historic county of Durham in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Durham County, it administers and organises rugby union clubs, competitions and Durham county rugby representative teams.
