1949 Raisin Bowl (January)
The 1949 Raisin Bowl was held on January 1, 1949 at Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno, California. This was the fourth annual Raisin Bowl and the last one played in January. The Occidental Tigers defeated the Colorado A&M Aggies by a score of 21–20. The game was the highest scoring of the five Raisin Bowls played. Bob Hainlen attempted a field goal for the Aggies which was good, but it was nullified by a penalty. On the next play, he faked a field goal attempt, throwing the ball to a wide open Keith Thompson for a touchdown. Frank Faucett's kick was blocked, however, leaving it at 6-0. Ratcliffe Stadium
Ratcliffe Stadium is a collegiate athletic venue in the western United States, located on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. Opened in 1926, it was renamed in 1941 after their first football coach, Emory Ratcliffe. The stadium hosted the Raisin Bowl and was home to the Fresno State Bulldogs football team through 1979; they moved to their on-campus Bulldog Stadium in 1980. Ratcliffe also hosted the West Coast Relays, a major track and field competition. Today, local high school football games and various track and field events are still held there. The stadium has a seating capacity of 13,000, and it is located at 1101 E. University Avenue, along Blackstone Avenue. Roy Dennis (American Football)
Roy Dennis (1925 – January 7, 1988) was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Occidental College from 1945 to 1956, compiling a record of 52–39–4. Dennis also coached basketball, baseball, tennis, Swimming (sport), swimming, and water polo at Occidental and was the school's athletic director until 1970. Dennis attended Los Angeles High School in Los Angeles, where he won honors playing football, basketball, and baseball. He then move on to Occidental, where he played football as an End (gridiron football), end and baseball as a first baseman, winning all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Southern California Conference honors in both sports before graduating in 1933. Bob Davis (American Football Coach)
Robert L. Davis (February 13, 1908 – January 10, 1965) was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts—now known as Colorado State University—from 1947 to 1955. Davis was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and played his collegiate football at the University of Utah under Ike Armstrong. Quarterback and team captain in 1929, Davis lead Utah to the conference championship, graduating in 1930. He coached at South Salt Lake City High School, Weber Junior College, and was an assistant coach at the University of Utah and the University of Denver before being named as the head coach of football at Colorado A&M College on January 6, 1947. The game pitted the San Jose State Spartans and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This was the fifth and final Raisin Bowl played. 1948 Occidental Tigers Football Team
The 1948 Occidental Tigers football team represented Occidental College in the Southern California Conference (SCC) during the 1948 college football season. In their fourth season under head coach Roy Dennis, the Tigers compiled a perfect 9–0 record (4–0 against SCC opponents), won the SCC championship, and outscored all opponents by a total of 206 to 46. The team concluded its season with a victory over Colorado A&M in the 1949 Raisin Bowl. Los Angeles Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield served as an advisory backfield coach as the team prepared for its bowl game. The 1990 Freedom Bowl was an American college football bowl game between the Colorado State Rams and the Oregon Ducks. Background The Rams had finished second in the Western Athletic Conference to earn a bowl appearance, their first since 1949, in Earle Bruce's second season as head coach.
