1948 Occidental Tigers Football Team
The 1948 Occidental Tigers football team represented Occidental College in the Southern California Conference (SCC) during the 1948 college football season. In their fourth season under head coach Roy Dennis, the Tigers compiled a perfect 9–0 record (4–0 against SCC opponents), won the SCC championship, and outscored all opponents by a total of 206 to 46. The team concluded its season with a victory over Colorado A&M in the 1949 Raisin Bowl. Los Angeles Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield served as an advisory backfield coach as the team prepared for its bowl game. Occidental was led on offense by halfback Johnny Trump and quarterback Joe Johnson. Roy Dennis (American Football)
Roy Dennis (1925 – January 7, 1988) was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Occidental College from 1945 to 1956, compiling a record of 52–39–4. Dennis also coached basketball, baseball, tennis, Swimming (sport), swimming, and water polo at Occidental and was the school's athletic director until 1970. Dennis attended Los Angeles High School in Los Angeles, where he won honors playing football, basketball, and baseball. He then move on to Occidental, where he played football as an End (gridiron football), end and baseball as a first baseman, winning all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Southern California Conference honors in both sports before graduating in 1933. Dennis joined the coaching staff at his alma mater in the fall of 1934 as assistant football coach under Bill Anderson (coach), Bill Anderson. Ratcliffe Stadium
Ratcliffe Stadium is a collegiate athletic venue in the western United States, located on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. Opened in 1926, it was renamed in 1941 after their first football coach, Emory Ratcliffe. The stadium hosted the Raisin Bowl and was home to the Fresno State Bulldogs football team through 1979; they moved to their on-campus Bulldog Stadium in 1980. Ratcliffe also hosted the West Coast Relays, a major track and field competition. Today, local high school football games and various track and field events are still held there. The 1948 San Francisco State Gators football team represented San Francisco State College—now known as San Francisco State University—as a member of the Far Western Conference (FWC) during the 1948 college football season. Led by sixth-year head coach Dick Boyle, San Francisco State compiled an overall record of 3–5 with a mark of 2–2 in conference play, placing third in the FWC. For the season the team was outscored by its opponents 137 to 63. The Gators played home games at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. At the end of the season, the Gators were invited to participate in the second annual Fruit Bowl. Held on December 5, it was the first interracial bowl game played in the United States. Occidental–Whittier Football Rivalry
The Occidental–Whittier football rivalry was a college football rivalry between the Occidental College Tigers and the Whittier College Poets, both members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The rivalry has been played 108 times, renewed annually since 1907, except for interruptions during the World Wars and in 2017. By 1935, the ''Los Angeles Times'' was already referring to the Tigers and Poets as "old rivals". The schools met twice in the years of 1913, 1984, and 1989, the latter two due to the SCIAC's doubling up of one opponent per season in the 1980s. The game is often referred to as the Shoes Game, as the winner maintains possession of Myron Claxton's bronzed shoes as a trophy. Over its more than 100-year history, the rivalry has been relatively even, with Oxy maintaining a 57–52–2 edge.
