At the 1896 Summer Olympics, two weightlifting events were contested (men's one hand lift and two hand lift). The top two places were won by the same two men in each event, though their order was reversed for the two events. The bronze medals were split by the two Greek weightlifters. Viggo Jensen
Alexander Viggo Jensen (born 22 June 1874 in Copenhagen, Denmark; died 2 November 1930 in Copenhagen, Denmark) was a Danish weightlifter, sport shooter, gymnast, and athlete. He was the first Danish and Nordic Olympic champion, at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. The first weightlifting event held was the two-handed lift, in a style now known as the clean and jerk. Jensen and Launceston Elliot of Great Britain and Ireland finished the competition tied at 111.5 kilograms, though the judges declared Jensen had performed the lift with better form and would be awarded first place. The British delegation protested, resulting in more attempts being given both lifters to improve their scores. Neither did and therefore Jensen retained first place, but he had injured his shoulder in the extra attempts. That injury hampered Jensen's efforts in the one-handed lift, the snatch. Hans Christian Viggo-Hansen (31 March 1859 – 6 October 1930) was a Danish painter, sculptor and artisan metalsmith. Biography Early life and education He was born Hans Christian Viggo Hansen in Copenhagen, the son of master brazier Peter Christian Hansen (1824–97) and Sara Marie Henriette Andersen (1824–84). He completed a brazier's apprenticeship in 1879 but had aspirations to become a painter. He received preparatory training in painting under painter and conservator Carl Christian Andersen (1849-1906) before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for three quarters of a year in 1882-83. Career He had his debut at the Charlottenborg Exhibition in 1885–86 with two paintings, ''A View of Christianshavns Kanal and A View of Copenhagen Harbour from Nybørs'', but a visual impairment then forced him to give up painting. Kristian Erslev
Kristian Sophus August Erslev (December 28, 1852 – June 20, 1930) was a Danish historian and professor. Biography Kristian Erslev was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1870, Erslev graduated from Mariboes School in Copenhagen, and began studying at the University of Copenhagen, graduating with a magister degree in 1876. After a study trip to Germany, Italy, Greece and France, he return in 1879 to graduate as Dr.Phil. From 1881, Erslev became a research fellow at the Gehejme Archives and in 1883 he became professor of history at the University of Copenhagen. His work involved a variety of subjects, including historiography. Erslev's influence on the Danish academic community was great and he was considered "the master" Danish historian. As editor of the Danish '' Historisk Tidsskrift'' he also set the standards for solid, factual historical writing. Christian Mølsted
Christian Ferdinand Andreas Mølsted (15 October 1862 – 10 May 1930) was a Danish artist who specialized in marine painting. He is best known for his painting of the frigate ''Niels Juel'' during the Battle of Heligoland on 9 May 1864. Biography Born in Dragør, he was the son of Andreas Adolf Nikolaj Mølsted, a fisherman, and Ane Hans-Nielsdatter. With financial support from a relative, he completed his education in Copenhagen at '' Det tekniske Selskab'' where he graduated in 1879. After sailing to Madeira that summer on the frigate ''Jylland'', he entered the Danish Academy in October 1880, under the tutelage of Frederik Vermehren, Jorgen Roed, Julius Exner and Carl Bloch. During his studies, he travelled to Paris and London where he was able to observe the trends in contemporary art.
