1926 Wyoming State Elections
A general election was held in the U.S. state of Wyoming on Tuesday, November 2, 1926. All of the state's executive officers—the Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, and Superintendent of Public Instruction—were up for election. Republicans narrowly picked up the governorship and solidified their control on the other statewide offices, increasing their margin of victory in each race. Governor Incumbent Democratic Governor Nellie Tayloe Ross ran for re-election to a second term. She was narrowly defeated for re-election by Republican Frank Emerson, the Wyoming State Engineer. Nellie Tayloe Ross
Nellie Davis Tayloe Ross (November 29, 1876 – December 19, 1977) was an American educator and politician who served as the 14th governor of Wyoming from 1925 to 1927, and as the 28th and first female director of the United States Mint from 1933 to 1953. She was the first woman to serve as governor of a U.S. state, and remains the only woman to have served as governor of Wyoming. Ross was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, to James Wynns Tayloe, a native of Tennessee, and Elizabeth Blair Green, who owned a plantation on the Missouri River. Her family moved to Miltonvale, Kansas in 1884, and she graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1892. She attended a teacher-training college for two years and taught kindergarten for four years. Frank Emerson
Frank Collins Emerson (May 26, 1882February 18, 1931) was an American engineer and politician from Wyoming. He was most notable for his service as the 15th Governor of Wyoming from January 3, 1927, until his death. Biography Frank C. Emerson was born in Saginaw, Michigan on May 26, 1882. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1904 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After graduating from college, Emerson relocated to Cora, Wyoming, where he became chief engineer of the Wyoming Land and Irrigation Company. He later worked for other corporations, including the Big Horn Canal Association, Lower Hanover Canal Association, Wyoming Sugar Company, and Worland Drainage District. Vincent Carter
Vincent Michael Carter (November 6, 1891 – December 30, 1972) was a United States representative from Wyoming. Born in St. Clair, Pennsylvania, he moved with his parents to Pottsville in 1893. He attended public schools, the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School, and Fordham University. He graduated in 1915 from Catholic University's Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. During World War I he served in the United States Marine Corps as a lieutenant in the Eighth Regiment, Third Brigade, and was a captain in the Wyoming Army National Guard from 1919 to 1921. Carter was admitted to the bar in 1919, and commenced practice in Casper, Wyoming. He moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1929 and continued the practice of law, serving as deputy attorney general of Wyoming from 1919 to 1923. All of the state's executive officers—the Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, and Superintendent of Public Instruction—were up for election. Democrats improved considerably from their performances in 1918, with William B. Ross winning the gubernatorial election and almost all of their statewide candidates outpacing their 1918 nominees. However, Republicans held all of the other statewide offices. Governor Incumbent Republican Governor Robert D. Carey ran for re-election to a second term. However, he was defeated in the Republican primary by banker Frank Hay. In the general election, William B. Ross, the Democratic nominee and the former Laramie County Attorney, narrowly defeated Hay.
