Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation
NRK, an abbreviation of the Norwegian ''Norsk Rikskringkasting AS'', generally expressed in English as the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, is the Norwegian government-owned radio and television public broadcasting company, and the largest media organisation in Norway. All other TV channels, broadcast from Norway, were banned between 1960 and 1981. NRK broadcasts three national TV channels and thirteen national radio channels on digital terrestrial television, digital terrestrial radio and subscription television. All NRK radio stations are streamed online at NRK.no, which also offers an extensive TV service. NRK is a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union. Sjur Helgeland
Sjur Larsson Helgeland (19 August 1858 − 12 April 1924) was a Norwegian hardingfele fiddler and composer. Biography He was born at Voss in Hordaland, Norway. His parents were Lars Olsson Hirt (1823-1908) and Brita Helgeland (1820-98). He grew up in the rural valley of Myrkdalen in the parish of Vossestrand. He received musical training from local Hardanger fiddle players including Ola Mosafinn (1828–1912). In 1896, he won the first annual Norwegian folk music and dance competition (''Vest landskappleiken'') conducted at Bergen. Gunnar Brunvoll
Gunnar Brunvoll (6 June 1924 – 27 April 1999) was a Norwegian impresario and opera administrator. He was co-founder of the Norwegian Opera Company, and was manager at Norwegian National Opera and Ballet for more than twenty years. Personal life Brunvoll was born in Bærum as a son of Jonas Brunvoll and Kirsten Sørsdal, and was a brother of singer Jonas Brunvoll. He was married to Solveig Pettersen. During the Occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany he was involved in the civil resistance movement, including editing of the illegal newspaper ''Norge''. Both his parents and his brother Jonas ended up in concentration camps in Germany, while Gunnar escaped to Sweden and further to Great Britain and Canada, where he was trained as a pilot at the training camp Little Norway. Career Brunvoll did not continue his military career after World War II. In 1945 he established his own impresario and concert agency. Norsk Biografisk Leksikon
is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. It was published by Aschehoug with economic support from the state. bought the rights to NBL1 from Aschehoug in 1995, and after a pre-project in 1996–97 the work for a new edition began in 1998. The project had economic support from the Fritt Ord Foundation and the Ministry of Culture, and the second edition (NBL2) was launched in the years 1999–2005, including 10 volumes and around 5,700 articles. Edvard Fliflet Bræin
Edvard Fliflet Bræin (23 August 1924 – 30 April 1976) was a Norwegian composer and conductor. He is best remembered for the composition ''Ut mot havet'' and the opera ''Anne Pedersdotter''. Personal life Bræin was born in Kristiansund as the son of composer, conductor and organist Edvard Bræin (1887–1957) and his wife Magnhild Fliflet. He married Karen Torjusen in 1946. Career Bræin studied at the institution Musikkonservatoriet i Oslo from 1942 to 1945, and musical composition with Bjarne Brustad and conducting with Odd Grüner-Hegge. His debut as conductor was in Bergen in 1947, with Musikselskabet Harmoniens orkester. His first compositions were ''De glade musikanter'' and ''Konsertouverture'' from 1948. Egil Hovland
Egil Hovland (October 18, 1924 – February 5, 2013) was a Norwegian composer. Hovland was born in RÃ¥de. He studied at the Oslo conservatory with Arild Sandvold and Bjarne Brustad, in Copenhagen with Vagn Holmboe, at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland, and in Florence with Luigi Dallapiccola. He was the organist and choir leader in Fredrikstad from 1949 until his death. His many works include two symphonies, a concerto for trumpet and strings, ''Music for Ten Instruments'', a set of variations for two pianos, and a lament for orchestra. His sacred works include a ''Norwegian Te Deum'', a Gloria, a Magnificat, and numerous works for organ, and he was one of the most noted church composers of Norway. He wrote in diverse styles, including Norwegian-Romantic, Gregorian, neo-classical, twelve-tone, aleatoric, and serial. It sold 211,769 copies in 2015 (172,029 printed copies according to University of Bergen) and estimated 1.2 million readers. It converted from broadsheet to compact format in March 2005. ''Aftenposten''s online edition is at Aftenposten.no. It is considered a newspaper of record for Norway. ''Aftenposten'' is a private company wholly owned by the public company Schibsted ASA.
