Sjur Helgeland
Sjur Larsson Helgeland (19 August 1858 − 12 April 1924) was a Norwegian hardingfele fiddler and composer. Biography He was born at Voss in Hordaland, Norway. His parents were Lars Olsson Hirt (1823-1908) and Brita Helgeland (1820-98). He grew up in the rural valley of Myrkdalen in the parish of Vossestrand. He received musical training from local Hardanger fiddle players including Ola Mosafinn (1828–1912). Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. Vinje Church ( no, Vinje kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Voss Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Vinje. It is the church for the Vinje parish which is part of the Hardanger og Voss prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1871 using plans drawn up by the architect Ole Vangberg. The church seats about 350 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1329, but the church was not new that year. The first church was most likely a wooden stave church that was built during the 13th century. The church was located in Upper Vinje, about to the northeast of the present site of the church. Hardingfele
A Hardanger fiddle ( no, hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood. The F-holes of the Hardanger fiddle are unique, oftentimes with a more “sunken” appearance, and generally straighter edges (unlike the frilly, swirly F-holes of a violin). Four of the strings are strung and played like a violin, while the rest, named understrings or sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four. These extra strings are tuned and secured with extra pegs at the top of the scroll, effectively doubling the length of a Hardingfele scroll when compared to a violin.
