1916 Copa Del Rey Final
The 1916 Copa del Rey Final was the 16th final of the Spanish cup competition, the Copa del Rey. The final was played at Camp de la Indústria in Barcelona on 7 May 1916. The match was won by Athletic Bilbao, who beat Madrid FC 4–0. The star of the match was Félix Zubizarreta, who scored a hat-trick to help Bilbao to a 4-0 win. He become only the second player to score a hat-trick in the final after teammate Pichichi, who had done it in the previous final against Espanyol. 1916 Copa Del Rey
The Copa del Rey 1916 was the 16th staging of the Copa del Rey, the Spanish football cup competition. The competition started on 26 March 1916, and concluded on 7 May 1916, with the final, held at the Camp de la Indústria in Barcelona, in which Athletic Bilbao lifted the trophy for the 7th time ever with a 4–0 victory over Madrid FC, with a hat-trick from Félix Zubizarreta. It was Athletic's third title in a row, thus gaining the right to keep the trophy. However, this tournament is best known for its El Clásico in the semi-finals which saw Madrid FC and FC Barcelona go head-to-head for the first time in 14 years in the competition's history, and the two sides were only separated after four thrilling matches including a dramatic 6–6 draw with extra-time and hat-tricks from the likes of Bernabéu and Alcántara. El Viejo Clásico (''The Old Classic'') also known as ''El Otro Clásico'' (''The Other Classic'') is the name given to any football match between Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid. Until 10 December 2011, this fixture was the most played in the history of Spanish football, when it was surpassed by El Clásico (between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona). However, it remains the most played game in the Copa del Rey – although only five of the 56 matches took place in the 21st century. Arthur Vere Scott Johnson (12 April 1879 – 23 May 1929) was an Irish coach and footballer who played as both a forward and goalkeeper for Madrid FC. He was one of the most important figures in the amateur beginnings of Real Madrid CF, since it was the knowledge that he brought from a more advanced football in England that helped the club to have a rapid sporting growth in its early years, thus being one of the main architects of the foundations that saw the club win its first titles and become one of the best teams in the country in the early 20th century. Sotero Aranguren Labairu (7 May 1894 – 26 February 1922), was an Argentine footballer born in Buenos Aires who spend his youth in Basque Country. He was a midfielder and played most of his career for Real Madrid CF. He and his brother Eulogio were team-mates at Real Madrid. Biography He played for Real Madrid for seven years, between 1911 and 1918, scoring 4 goals in 60 matches. He is considered "the first white symbol" by the Real Madrid official website. His premature death at the age of 28 led the club to build a statue representing Sotero and one of his team-mates, Machimbarrena (who also died young) at the entrance of the first team's locker room. The statue, added in 1925, now stands at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, and is seen as a totem of inspiration for Real Madrid's coming generations of footballers. Santiago Bernabéu de Yeste (; 8 June 1895 – 2 June 1978) was a Spanish footballer who played for Real Madrid as a forward. He is widely regarded one of the most important figures in the history of Real Madrid, having served as its president for 35 years, from 11 September 1943 until his death in 1978. José María Castell García de la Cruz (24 September 1896 - 13 October 1981) was a Spanish footballer who played as a midfielder. Castell was one of the most important figures of Madrid FC at the beginning and middle of the 20th last century, as a player, captain, manager and even as an architect. Eulogio Aranguren
Eulogio Aranguren Labairu (27 July 1892 – 19 October 1972) was an Argentine footballer who spent his youth in Basque Country. He was a midfielder and played most of his career for Real Madrid CF. He was the elder brother of Sotero Aranguren who was also his teammate at Real Madrid. Biography He played for Real Madrid for 10 years, between 1911 and 1921. In this period he made 20 appearances but failed to score in official games, as he played mostly as defender. Three years after the premature death of his brother, Eulogio (together with King Alfonso XIII and a sister of Machimbarrena, the captain of Real Madrid who also died in the same period) inaugurated a statue to the two players at the entrance of the first team's locker room.
