1912 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1912 Auckland Rugby League season was the 4th official year of the Auckland Rugby League. The season commenced on 11 May, with the start of the First Grade competition. It saw six teams competing for the First Grade title after the addition of the Manukau Rovers who were formed after a meeting in Onehunga in March. Newton Rangers secured their first Auckland first grade club title after they defeated Ponsonby United in the penultimate round at Eden Park on 13 July. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Club competitions Auckland's premier competition is the Fox Memorial Shield. This has been contested since 1910. Charles Savory
Charles Savory (23 March 1889 – 8 May 1915) was a New Zealand international rugby league footballer and champion boxer who died in the First World War. An Australasian and New Zealand international representative forward, Savory was one of four Kiwis players selected to go on the 1911–12 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain. Due to playing the same sports, he has been described as "the Sonny Bill Williams of his time." Ernie Asher
Ernest "Ernie" Asher (21 April 1886 – 10 April 1973), also known as Te Keepa Pouwhiuwhiu, was a New Zealand rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played representative rugby league (RL) for New Zealand Māori and New Zealand. His brothers included John Atirau Asher and fellow international Albert Asher. Early life Asher was born in Tauranga in 1886, the seventh of eleven children. Billy Dervan
Billy Dervan is a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Playing career From Auckland, Dervan was selected on the 1912 New Zealand tour of Australia. No test matches were played on this tour. He had originally played rugby for the City club before switching to rugby league and joining the Newton Rangers The City Newton Dragons are a defunct New Zealand rugby league club that was based at Victoria Park, Auckland. Alexander William Stanaway (14 July 1886 – 27 June 1972), also known as Ariki Haira, was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand. Charles Dunning
Charles Avery Dunning (July 31, 1885 – October 1, 1958) was the third premier of Saskatchewan. Born in England, he emigrated to Canada at the age of 16. By the age of 36, he was premier. He had a successful career as a farmer, businessman, and politician, both provincially and federally. A Liberal, Dunning led his government in one general election, in 1925, winning a majority government. He was the third of six Liberal premiers to date. Don Kenealy
Don Kenealy was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Early life Kenealy grew up in the Te Puke area where he attended Te Puke Primary School. He later moved to Auckland and went to Sacred Heart College where he excelled as a cricketer and rugby footballer. He left school in 1909 and in 1910 was playing rugby for Marist Brothers second grade team. Playing career Kenealy switched to rugby league in 1911 and played for Eden Ramblers from their foundation in 1911 to 1913. He was a back and captained the side in 1913. Robert "Bob" Mitchell is a New Zealand rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. Playing career Mitchell played for the City Rovers in the Auckland Rugby League competition. Joe Bennett (rugby League)
Edward Joseph Bennett (14 October 1883 – 9 May 1965) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer. Bennett played in the second row position. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in two test matches against England in 1920. In the process he became the 144th player to represent New Zealand. Arthur Reginald Howe Francis (8 June 1882 – 15 June 1957), also known by the nickname of "Bolla", was a New Zealand dual-code international rugby union and rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s, 1910s and 1920s, and rugby union coach of the 1930s. Arthur Thompson "Tom" Haddon (6 March 1886 — 26 July 1976) was a New Zealand rugby league player. He was Kiwi number 136 after playing two tests for New Zealand against Australia in 1919. Early life Arthur Thompson Haddon was born in Yorkshire, England and came to New Zealand in 1910. He joined the North Shore Albions that same year and played for their senior side. Playing career North Shore Albions Tom Haddon played for North Shore Albions from 1910 until 1913 before he joined Grafton Athletic in their first season. In 1914, he was elected on to their committee and also was chosen as one of their selectors. At this stage of his career he played primarily on the wing before later on moving into the forwards. Stan Weston
Stanley James Weston (26 November 1889 – 23 December 1967) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. Early life Weston was born in Auckland to Stephen James Weston. He had two brothers and three sisters. His younger brother, Lyn Weston, also played rugby union. Playing career Weston played for the North Shore club in the Auckland Rugby League competition and represented Auckland. He played for North Shore from 1911 to 1914 when he retired from playing. He did however take up refereeing and began refereeing senior club games in the 1917 season.
