Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Cissi Cleve
Cissi Cleve, born Cecilie Schou Cleve (17 December 1911 – 27 December 1993), was an operatic singer and composer, and the daughter of the composer Halfdan Cleve. Biography Cleve danced ballet for 14 years, and studied under Per Aabel and Lowe Krohn. She performed together with Sonja Henie at Centralteatret on spectacle, as well as at the National Theatre (Oslo) for the royals. At the age of 21 she got the Ruud-scholarship for 4 years in a row, and studied singing in Vienna. Later she was engaged for six weeks at the Cairo Opera House as part of the Vienna State Opera. Cleve was awarded the Leharmedaljen by Franz Lehár personally. She was engaged for three years by the Nuremberg Opera, until the outbreak of 2nd world war. She was a member of Tono since she was 19 years old, and have as composer released 15 piano pieces and 2 pieces for Janitsjar Orchestra, as well as 14 pieces for orchestra. Egil Storbekken
Egil Storbekken (25 November 1911 – 19 March 2002) was a Norwegian folk musician, composer and instrument maker. He was born in Tolga, Hedmark. Robert Riefling
Robert Dankwart Leo Riefling (17 September 1911 – 1 July 1988) was a Norwegian classical pianist and pedagogist. He was regarded among Scandinavia's leading pianists, and toured all over the western world. He was a Professor in Copenhagen from 1967, and in Oslo from 1973. Personal life Robert Riefling was born in Aker as the son of musician Albert Heinrich Theodor Riefling and Ingeborg Louise Rollag. He was a brother of pianist Reimar Riefling. He was married three times, first from 1944 to 1947 to pianist Amalie Christie, then from 1949 to Borghild Hammerich, and from 1988 to Bibbi Lindstrøm. He was a brother-in-law of the military officers Werner Christie and Johan Christie. Career Riefling made his concert debut with the Oslo Philharmonic in Kristiania in 1922, and had his solo debut in 1925.
