is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. Kristian Henriksen
Kristian "Svarten" Henriksen (3 March 1911 – 8 February 2004) was a Norwegian footballer and coach. As a player, Henriksen was a wing half who played for Sarpsborg, Lyn and Frigg. With Lyn, he won the 1945 and the 1946 Norwegian Football Cup. He also played 28 times for the Norwegian national team. At national team level, Henriksen was a member of the 1936 Olympic squad that went on to win the bronze medals. However, Henriksen was a reserve, and did not play in the tournament. Erling Fjellbirkeland (21 February 1911 – 15 November 1986) was a Norwegian research administrator. Personal life Fjellbirkeland was born in Fana on 21 February 1911, a son of farmer Nils Fjellbirkeland and Kari Grinde. He married Maina Schia in 1940. Career Fjellbirkeland graduated as cand.oecon. in 1935. He directed the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities from 1953 to 1966. He was secretary-general of ''Hovedkomiteen for norsk forskning'' from 1966 to 1981. From 1951 to 1968 he was chairman of the board of the Foundation for Student Life in Oslo. Charles Mathiesen (12 February 1911 – 7 November 1994) was a speed skater who was active from 1930 to 1948. Biography Mathiesen was born in Drammen, Norway. Skating for ''Drammens Skøyteklubb'' (Drammen's Skating Club – the same club Ivar Ballangrud represented for a while), Charles Mathiesen made his international debut in 1933, finishing eighth at the World Allround Championships. The following year, Mathiesen won his first medal when he took the silver at the Norwegian Allround Championships (held at his hometown of Drammen) behind Michael Staksrud. Mathiesen won the Norwegian Allround Championships, being the "eternal runner-up" behind skaters like Ballangrud, Staksrud, Hans Engnestangen, and a few more, winning silver a total number of six times. The season after winning his first medal, Mathiesen participated in the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and became Olympic Champion on the 1,500 m. Rigmor Frimannslund Holmsen (31 January 1911 – 28 April 2006) was a Norwegian ethnologist. Personal life Frimannslund was born in Bergen on 31 January 1911, a daughter of military officer Bernhard Marius Frimannslund and Anna Sofie Thomassen. She was married to historian Andreas Holmsen from 1961 until his death in 1989. Career Holmsen graduated as mag.art. in 1941. Her thesis was a treatment of marriage proposal traditions in Norway. From 1946 she was appointed as conservator-restorer at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, at the museum's newly established section . She was assigned with this institute and the Institute for Comparative Research in Human Culture during most of her career. Her research work focused on rural societies, including farms and neighbourhoods, primarily in Norway. Sverre S. Engen (January 28, 1911 – April 4, 2001) was a Norwegian-American skier, ski coach, ski area manager, and film-maker. Biography Engen was born in the town of Mjøndalen, in Buskerud county, Norway, the second son of Trond Sorli Engen and Martha Maranda Oen Engen. He had two brothers, Alf Engen (1909–1997) and Corey Engen (1916–2006), both of whom helped expand the sport of skiing in the intermountain U.S. Being the second son of a famous skiing father, Engen was naturally reared to ski. After his father died of the Spanish flu in 1918, his mother and brothers moved the short distance to small town Steinberg. At age 18, Sverre and older brother Alf (age 20) emigrated to the United States in 1929, first settling in Chicago, then relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1931.
