Francisco José Caeiro (Arraiolos, Vimieiro, 6 March 1890 – Lisbon, 24 May 1976) was a Portuguese politician and former Minister and law professor. Background He was the son of Faustino José Caeiro and wife Emília Augusta da Conceição, both born and married in Arraiolos, Vimieiro; paternal grandson of Francisco José Caeiro and wife Rosa Maria, and maternal grandson of Manuel da Rosa de Brito and wife Emília da Conceição. Caetano da Costa Alegre (26 April 1864 – 18 April 1890) was a Portuguese poet. Biography Born to a Cape Verdean ''crioulo'' family in the colony of São Tomé in Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe, off the coast of Africa, he settled in Portugal in 1882 and attended medical school in Lisbon, hoping to become a naval doctor, but died of tuberculosis in Alcobaça before he could fulfill his dream. He wrote several reviews under his name including ''A Imprensa'' (1885-1891) and '' A Leitura'' (1894–96), the last one was posthumously published. Publications of his poems In 1916, a friend, journalist Cruz Magalhãez, published the poetry he wrote during the eight years Costa Alegre lived in Portugal. The work, written in the popular romantic style of the time, was an immediate success, not least because of how it celebrates his African origins, expresses longing for his home in São Tomé, and describes the sense of alienation he feels because of his race. António Francisco Ferreira da Silva Porto (24 August 1817 – 2 April 1890) was a Portuguese trader and explorer in Angola, in the Portuguese West Africa. Biography Silva Porto was born to a poor family in Porto in continental Portugal; he was the son of humble parents, but whose father distinguished himself in battles against the French during their invasion in 1810. Instead of following his father into the military, the intelligent and ambitious boy looked to economic possibilities farther afield. Brazil was an obvious possibility, owing to the success of many emigrants; at the age of twelve, with his father's blessing, he emigrated to the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro on board the brig ''Rio Ave''. Luís Carlos de Lima de Almeida Braga (20 October 1890 – 27 February 1970) was a Portuguese writer and politician who has one of the leading figures within the Integralismo Lusitano movement. Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco (12 October 1890 – 27 November 1955) was a Portuguese composer, musicologist, and professor of music who played a pre-eminent part in the development of Portuguese music in the first half of the 20th century. Life Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco was born in Lisbon into an aristocratic family who for centuries had had close ties to the royal family in Portugal. His brother, Pedro, was a conductor. Luís had a cosmopolitan education, studied piano and violin beginning in childhood and began composing at a precocious age. He studied music in Berlin and Paris, where he worked with Engelbert Humperdinck and other composers. He returned to Portugal and became professor of composition starting in 1916 at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music, where he became a leading force in restructuring musical education. Maria de Conceição de Matos Ferreira da Silva (29 September 1886 – 19 September 1952) was a Portuguese actress and theatre personality. Career Matos studied piano, singing and dramatic art at the Royal Conservatory of Lisbon, and for her final exam performed '' Rosas de Todo Ano'', written by Júlio Dantas. She debuted professionally at the Teatro Nacional D. Mary II in the play ''Judas'' (1907). She married in 1913 the actor Mendonça de Carvalho, who founded the theater company Maria Matos - Mendonça de Carvalho, a company that enjoyed considerable prestige in Portuguese theatre. In 1940, she was appointed at the Conservatório Nacional de Teatro, where she was head of Theatrical aesthetics and Vocal coaching. Her talent was particularly evident in the farce and the comedy.
