1879–80 Scottish Districts Season
The 1879–80 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District trial match. History The Inter-City match was due to be played on 1 December 1879 but was postponed due to frost. The 20 December match ended in a draw. There was supposed to be an East v Edinburgh District match but it was indefinitely postponed as Edinburgh wanted the match played in Edinburgh; or, if away, the match to be played in Perth with the provincial clubs to pay their own expenses. The 1878-79 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District trial match. History Due to 9 weeks of frost there was no inter-city match played this season. The East v West match was played; in quite soft ground. The kick-off was delayed, and the players found it tough to score. The match ended nil - nil. Results Inter-City No match played. East of Scotland District is a select provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players from the East of Scotland. Founded in 1876, the East of Scotland District team - and its corresponding West of Scotland District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. This was meant as an impetus to include players from beyond the original Glasgow District and Edinburgh District catchment areas. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the first international football match, between Scotland and England, played on 30 November 1872, which ended in a goalless draw, and was watched by a crowd of 4,000. A plaque on the wall of the clubhouse was placed to commemorate the match in 2002 by Mr John C McGinn, President of the Scottish Football Association. John Guthrie Tait
John "Jack" Guthrie Tait (24 August 1861 – 4 October 1945) V.D. was a Scottish educator who became principal of the Central College of Bangalore prior to the First World War. In his early adulthood, Tait was a notable sportsman playing rugby union as a forward for Cambridge University and represented the Scotland international team twice between 1880 and 1885. As well as being a talented rugby player, Tait was, like his brother Frederick Guthrie Tait, a notable amateur golfer. Personal history Tait was born in Edinburgh in 1861, the eldest son of Scottish mathematical physicist Peter Guthrie Tait and Margaret Archer Porter. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy from 1871 to 1877 before studying Law at Peterhouse, Cambridge, from 1880. He received his BA in 1884, and on 7 November the same year was admitted at Lincoln's Inn. Tait was called to The Bar on 25 April 1888 and was awarded his MA in 1890.
