Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. It has been called "The Nation's First Superhighway." A canal from the Hudson to the Great Lakes was first proposed in the 1780s, but a formal survey was not conducted until 1808. The New York State Legislature authorized construction in 1817. Antoine Gérin-Lajoie
Antoine Gérin-Lajoie (; August 4, 1824 – August 7, 1882) was a Québécois Canadian attorney, poet and novelist. He was the author of the famous poem "Un Canadien errant" ('A Wandering Canadian'), as well as the novels roman du terroir ''Jean Rivard, le défricheur'' (1874) and its sequel, ''Jean Rivard, économiste'' (1876), among other works. He was the father of sociologist Léon Gérin. Early life and education Antoine Gérin-Lajoie was the eldest child of Antoine Gérin-Lajoie, Sr., and Marie-Amable Gélinas, who had seventeen children in all, of which ten survived childhood. His family hailed from Savoie, France, and arrived in Canada when his grandfather Jean served in the army of Louis-Joseph de Montcalm. John Robson (14 March 1824 – 29 June 1892) was a Canadian journalist and politician, who served as the ninth premier of British Columbia. Journalist and activist Robson spent his early life as a merchant in Canada West and Montreal in Canada East. In 1859, upon news of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, Robson moved west to the then Colony of British Columbia from Upper Canada. Peter Mitchell (politician)
Peter Mitchell (January 4, 1824 – October 25, 1899) was a Canadian politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation. Family In 1853, he married Mrs. Gough, a widow of St. John, New Brunswick; she died in 1889. His nephew was Charles R. Mitchell a former provincial Cabinet Minister and leader of the Alberta Liberal Party. Life He was born of Scottish parents at Newcastle in the county of Northumberland, New Brunswick, on January 4, 1824. He was educated at the Quebec grammar school; he studied law and was called to the bar of the province of New Brunswick in 1848. He practised his profession for five years and then entered into a partnership with a Mr. Hawe in the business of lumbering and shipbuilding. Lachine Canal
The Lachine Canal ( in French (language), French) is a canal passing through the southwestern part of the Island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, running 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) from the Old Port of Montreal to Lake Saint-Louis, through the boroughs of Lachine (borough), Lachine, LaSalle, Quebec, Lasalle and Le Sud-Ouest, Sud-Ouest. Before the canal construction there was a lake, Lac St. Pierre or or Petit Lac St. Pierre. The lake and its rivers can be seen on the maps of Montreal of the years 1700, 1744 and on the map titled "The isles of Montreal. As they have been surveyed by the French engineers" (1761).
