Hogarth's House
Hogarth's House is the former country home of the 18th-century English artist William Hogarth in Chiswick, adjacent to the A4. The House now belongs to the London Borough of Hounslow and is open to visitors as a historic house museum free of charge. Chiswick is now one of London's western suburbs, but in the 18th century it was a large village or small town quite separate from the metropolis, but within easy reach of it. Today the house is a Grade I listed building. Construction and early occupation The house was built between 1713 and 1717 in the corner of an orchard belonging to the Downes family. Its first occupant was Rev George Andreas Ruperti, the pastor of St Mary's Lutheran church in the Savoy, London, who used it as his country home. He cared for the thousands of refugees from the Rhineland who arrived in London following a famine in 1708–9. Anton August Beck (27 August 1713, Braunschweig - 17 March 1787, Braunschweig) was a German engraver. Johannes De Bosch
Johannes de Bosch (1713–1785) was a Dutch painter, engraver and draughtsman. He was born in Amsterdam, the son of the apothecary Jeroen de Bosch who owned a significant collection of paintings and drawings, so he was surrounded and influenced by fine art from an early age. He specialized in painting and drawing arcadian landscapes, inspired by the work of other artists such as the Dutch painter Jan van Huysum (Amsterdam 1682 - 1749). De Bosch also designed various vignettes for different publications, which were in turn engraved by several other artists. He is known also for his topographical drawings of several Dutch cities, such as Amsterdam and Zeist. Quadratura
Illusionistic ceiling painting, which includes the techniques of perspective ''di sotto in sù'' and ''quadratura'', is the tradition in Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo art in which ''trompe-l'œil'', perspective tools such as foreshortening, and other spatial effects are used to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on an otherwise two-dimensional or mostly flat ceiling surface above the viewer. Giuseppe Antonio Landi
Giuseppe Antonio Landi (30 October 1713 – 22 June 1791) was an 18th-century Italian neoclassical architect and painter of quadratura. Landi was born in Bologna. He was a pupil of Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena, and was received as an Academician of Bologna, where he was professor of architecture and perspective. Landi accepted a position as a draftsman for an expedition demarcating Portuguese territories in the North Region of Brazil under Dom João V. He left Bologna at the end of 1750 or beginning of 1751, taking a boat in Genoa bound for Lisbon. Landi stayed in Portugal for two years at the beginning of the reign of Dom José I of Portugal. Landi left for Pará on June 2, 1753, with other members of the technical commission. The commission stayed in Belém for a year before moving up to the upper Rio Negro, the theater of future operations.
