Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (''Fountain of the Four Rivers'') is a fountain in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X whose family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili, faced onto the piazza as did the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone of which Innocent was the sponsor. Description The base of the fountain is a basin from the centre of which travertine rocks rise to support four river gods and above them, a copy of an Egyptian obelisk surmounted with the Pamphili family emblem of a dove with an olive twig. Collectively, they represent four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile representing Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Ganges representing Asia, and the Río de la Plata representing the Americas. Balthasar Permoser
Balthasar Permoser (13 August 1651 – 18 February 1732) was among the leading sculptors of his generation, whose evolving working styles spanned the late Baroque and early Rococo. Permoser was born in Kammer bei Waging, Salzburg, today a part of the Bavarian town of Traunstein. He was trained first in Salzburg, in the workshop of Wolf Weißenkirchner, Wolf Weißenkirchner the Younger and in Vienna, where he learned the art of ivory carving, before he left in 1675 on a trip to Florence to work for Giovanni Battista Foggini, in whose studio he remained fourteen years, maturing his style. Called to Dresden in 1689 by John George III, Elector of Saxony, Johann Georg III, Elector of Saxony, he executed two monumental garden sculptures of Hercules. In 1697, on the way to Italy once more, he remained almost a year in his old haunts during which he sculpted the Atlas (architecture), atlantes for the west doorway of the Hofstallung in Salzburg. François-Alexandre Verdier
François-Alexandre Verdier (c. 1651 - 1730) was French painter, draftsman and engraver. He was a student and assistant of Charles Le Brun. Biography François-Alexandre Verdier was born in Paris around 1651. He studied under Charles Le Brun. In 1668 he was awarded the 1st prize in drawing at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. From 1668 to 1671 he lived in Italy at the Medici Villa. He won the Prix de Rome for drawing in 1668 for his work ''Première conquête de la Franche-Comté'', and again in 1671 for ''Le Roi donnant la paix à l'Europe''. He was admitted to the Academy in 1678. By 1684 he was a Professor. He exhibited at the Salon of 1704. He died in Paris in 1730. Œuvres Many of his drawings and paintings are at the Musée du Louvre. Willem Van Ingen
Willem van Ingen, or Guilhelmo Den Eersten (1651–1708), was a Dutch Golden Age painter active in Italy. Biography According to Houbraken, he learned to paint in Utrecht and attracted the attention of Johannes van Neercassel, who took him along on a trip to Rome. In Rome, he registered in the Bentvueghels as ''Guilhelmo den Eersten''. Houbraken goes on to mention that he worked for a year in Rome under Karel Marat, painting in many churches, and then traveled to Venice where he worked for Valentin Lefebvre painting on copper after Paolo Veronese. He then traveled to Naples before returning to the Netherlands. He is also known as ''Guillelmo van Ingen''. He is known as the teacher of Albert van Spiers (1665–1718), who was the teacher of Jacob de Wit Jacob de Wit (19 December 1695 – 12 November 1754) was a Dutch artist and interior decorator who painted many religious scenes.
