139th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 139th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army with two unrelated incarnations. The first 139th Infantry Regiment was formed during World War I from Missouri and Kansas National Guard troops and fought as part of the 35th Infantry Division. The second 139th Infantry Regiment briefly existed from 1954 to 1959 with the 30th Infantry Division in the North Carolina Army National Guard. The 252nd Armor Regiment is an armored regiment of the North Carolina Army National Guard, part of the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, which in turn is part of the 29th Infantry Division. Pentomic (cf. ''Greek pent(e)-'' +''-tome'' "of five parts") was a structure for infantry and airborne divisions adopted by the US Army between 1957 and 1963, in response to the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons, on future battlefields. It was intended that the five subordinate units, which were often referred to as battle groups (to distinguish them from traditional units), would be able to deploy and engage in operations more rapidly than conventional brigades, whilst also having greater offensive capabilities than conventional battalions. The 30th Armored Division was a Tennessee-based unit of the Army National Guard from the 1950s to the 1970s. Reidsville is a city in Rockingham County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. At the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 14,580. The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving division in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I.
