12th Seanad
This is a list of the members of the 12th Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland. These Senators were elected or appointed in 1969, after the 1969 general election and served until the close of poll for the 13th Seanad in 1973. Composition of the 12th Seanad There are a total of 60 seats in the Seanad. 43 Senators are elected by the Vocational panels, 6 elected by the Universities and 11 are nominated by the Taoiseach. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. It has been located, since its establishment, in Leinster House. Fine Gael
Fine Gael (, ; English: "Family (or Tribe) of the Irish") is a liberal-conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Fine Gael is currently the third-largest party in the Republic of Ireland in terms of members of Dáil Éireann and largest in terms of Irish members of the European Parliament. The party has a membership of 25,000 in 2021. Leo Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as party leader on 2 June 2017 and as Taoiseach on 14 June; Kenny had been leader since 2002, and Taoiseach since 2011. Seán Keegan
Seán Keegan (2 February 1930 – 9 July 2007) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. Biography A farmer from Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, his father had been active in the Irish War of Independence. He was elected to Westmeath County Council in 1955. He contested his first general election in 1965 at the behest of Seán Lemass. Keegan was first elected to the 12th Seanad in 1970 at a by-election to the Administrative Panel. He was re-elected to the Seanad in 1973, having been an unsuccessful candidate at the 1973 general election. At the 1977 general election, he was elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Longford–Westmeath constituency, with his surplus votes helping to elect Albert Reynolds, also for the first time. Dáil Éireann
Dáil Éireann ( , ; ) is the lower house, and principal chamber, of the Oireachtas (Irish legislature), which also includes the President of Ireland and Seanad Éireann (the upper house).Article 15.1.2º of the Constitution of Ireland reads: "The Oireachtas shall consist of the President and two Houses, viz.: a House of Representatives to be called Dáil Éireann and a Senate to be called Seanad Éireann." Cornelius O'Callaghan (Fianna Fáil Politician)
Cornelius Kevin O'Callaghan (1922 – 24 January 1974) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He stood for election to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil candidate for the Cork North constituency at the 1951 general election but was unsuccessful. He was elected to Seanad Éireann to the Agricultural Panel at a by-election on 24 February 1970. He was re-elected at the 1973 Seanad election. Owen Sheehy-Skeffington
Owen Lancelot Sheehy-Skeffington (19 May 1909 – 7 June 1970) was an Irish university lecturer and senator. The son of pacifists, feminists and socialists Francis and Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington, he was politically likeminded and as a member of the Irish Senate was praised as a defender of civil liberty, Democracy, separation of church and state, freedom of speech, women's rights, minority rights and many other liberal values. Early life Sheehy-Skeffington was brought up in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, was a Pacifist, Feminist and Socialist whose execution by firing squad, on the orders of Captain J.C. Bowen-Colthurst, during the week of the Easter Rising in 1916, became a cause célèbre. His mother was the suffragette Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington who founded the Irish Women's Franchise League. Cathaoirleach
Cathaoirleach (; Irish for chairperson; plural: ) is the title of the chair (or presiding officer) of Seanad Éireann, the sixty-member upper house of the Oireachtas, the legislature of Ireland. Patrick Malone (Irish Politician)
Patrick Malone (30 May 1916 – 3 December 1993) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. Malone was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kildare from 1970, when he won a by election caused by the death of Gerard Sweetman. He was re-elected at the subsequent 1973 general election but was defeated at the 1977 general election. 1973 Irish General Election
The 1973 Irish general election to the 20th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 28 February 1973, following the dissolution of the 19th Dáil on 5 February by President Éamon de Valera on the request of Taoiseach Jack Lynch. The general election took place in 42 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 144 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas.
