10th Mountain Division Special Troops Battalion
The 10th Mountain Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion is a unit of the United States Army headquartered at Fort Drum, New York. It is the organization for the command elements of the 10th Mountain Division. The battalion contains the division's senior command structure, including its headquarters company, as well as communications, intelligence, operational and support elements as well as the Division Band which provide services to any units assigned to the headquarters at a time. Activated to oversee division elements prior to World War II, the battalion fought in Italy for a year. After the war it served as the command element for the 10th when it was a training unit. Due to reorganizations in the Army, the 10th Mountain Headquarters was activated with only a headquarters company in 1985, and served in numerous contingencies throughout the 1990s. The 86th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the United States Army. The 86th Infantry was briefly activated during World War I but never sent overseas, then reactivated during World War II at Camp Hale in 1942, with 3 Battalions, and attached to the 10th Mountain Division. The regiment served with the 10th Mountain in Italy and was inactivated postwar. In 1948 it was reactivated and saw duty in Germany before inactivating in 1957. Camp Hale
Camp Hale was a U.S. Army training facility in the western United States, constructed in 1942 for what became the 10th Mountain Division. Located in central Colorado between Red Cliff and Leadville in the Eagle River valley, it was named for General Irving Hale and was at an elevation of above sea level. Onslow S. Rolfe, who had developed mountain warfare techniques as commander of the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, was selected to command Camp Hale. Soldiers were trained in mountain climbing, Alpine and Nordic skiing, cold-weather survival, as well as various weapons and ordnance. Camp Swift, Texas
Camp Swift is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bastrop County, Texas, Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,943 at the 2020 census. Camp Swift began as a United States Army training base built in 1942. It is named after Major General Eben Swift. History The Army signed a $25 million contract in January 1942 to build a training camp on 56,000 acres north of Bastrop, Texas.
