101 (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery
101 (Northumbrian) Medium Regiment Royal Artillery is part of the Army Reserve and has sub units throughout the north east as well as one sub unit in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is equipped with M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). History The origins of the Regiment can be traced back to 1860 when Artillery Volunteer units were raised in the United Kingdom, as a result of threats of a French invasion. This continued through the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908, and the re-forming of the Territorial Army in 1947. The Regiment was formed on the restructuring of the Territorial Army in April 1967. 1st Artillery Brigade (United Kingdom)
The 1st Artillery Brigade was a support formation of the British Army from 1961-77 and from 1997. Part of the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division, it oversaw all army close support artillery and deep fires units. Under the Future Soldier programme, the brigade merged with 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade to form 1st Deep Recce Strike Brigade Combat Team. Cold War In a reorganisation of the British Army of the Rhine following the 1957 Defence White Paper, the former 1st Army Group Royal Artillery was reduced to a 1-star command, and redesignated as the 1st Artillery Brigade (Field). The new brigade was headquartered at Tofrek Barracks in Hildesheim. On 4 October 1961, 1 AGRA was officially redesignated, but later dropped the '(Field)' title in 1967 following the 1966 Defence White Paper, becoming the 1st Artillery Brigade. 203 (Elswick) Battery Royal Artillery
203 (Elswick) Battery Royal Artillery is a part of 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery, an artillery regiment of the British Army. History Formed on 31 January 1900, the Elswick Battery, as it was then known, set off for South Africa to take part in the Second Boer War. The Battery was armed with 12 pounder guns manufactured by Armstrongs at Elswick. The guns had been paid for by Lady Meux, an eccentric brewery heiress. When the Territorial Army as it was then known was reorganised in April 1967, three Batteries of the Royal Artillery in Blyth and Seaton Delaval were merged to form 203 Battery based in Blyth, part of 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery. The Battery was equipped with the BL 5.5-inch Medium Gun in 1967, converting to the 105mm Light Gun in 1980. In April 1992, the Battery was again re-equipped, this time with FH-70 howitzers. Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and military town south of Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13,000 in 2017 and covering over 2,400 acres (about 10 km2). Under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, its population is expected to grow to over 25,000, making it the largest population centre in the local area. Dare Wilson Barracks, is a military installation in Hexham, Northumberland. The building is named after Major General Dare Wilson who was commissioned into the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and commanded 22 Special Air Service Regiment in the early 1960s. History The building was designed as the headquarters of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers and was completed in about 1891. Kingston Park is a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, about north west of the city centre. It is home to several large retailers, the largest being one of Tesco's flagship stores—at 11,055 square metres (119,000 sq ft) which was also the largest supermarket in the United Kingdom for one period of time. 204 (Tyneside Scottish) Battery Royal Artillery is part of 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery, an artillery regiment of the British Army.
