Árboles Petrificados
''Árboles'' is an album from Puerto Rican singer Roy Brown and Cuban singer Silvio Rodríguez, along with Cuban septet Afrocuba. Brown and Rodríguez has collaborated previously, but this is the first album where they are billed together. Background and recording ''Árboles'' was recorded from January to February 1987 at EGREM Studios in Havana, Cuba. It features five songs by Roy Brown, and two songs by Rodríguez. The last song, "Árboles", is sung by Brown and Rodríguez together. It is based on a poem by Clemente Soto Vélez. Roy Brown (Puerto Rican Musician)
Roy Brown Ramírez (born July 18, 1945 in Orlando, Florida) is a Puerto Rican musician and singer.Liner notes of "Basta Ya... Revolución" (Disco Libre) Early years Brown's father was an American United States Navy, naval officer and his mother a native of Puerto Rican citizenship, Puerto Rico. Brown was raised during turbulent times in the United States. Among the important issues of those days were racism, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Most of these events went on to form an important part in his ideals and his way of thinking. In the late-1960s, Brown enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico. He enjoyed writing poems and while he was a student, he became actively involved in groups against the Vietnam War, poor living conditions, and especially in favor of the independence movement of Puerto Rico. Clemente Soto Vélez
Clemente Soto Vélez (1905 – April 15, 1993) was a Puerto Rican nationalist, poet, journalist and activist who mentored many generations of artists in Puerto Rico and New York City. Upon his death in 1993, he left a rich legacy that contributed to the cultural, social and economic life of Puerto Ricans in New York and Latinos everywhere. Early years Soto Vélez was born in Lares, Puerto Rico a town known for "El Grito de Lares" of 1868, a rebellion against Spanish colonial rule. His parents died when he was seven years old and he went to live with his godfather who raised him. He received his primary education in Lares and later studied painting in the City of Arecibo under the guidance of Ildefonso Ruiz Vélez. In 1918, he moved to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico and lived with his sister. Juan Antonio Corretjer
Juan Antonio Corretjer Montes (March 3, 1908 – January 19, 1985) was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist and pro-independence political activist opposing United States rule in Puerto Rico. Early years Corretjer (birth name: Juan Antonio Corretjer Montes) was born in Ciales, Puerto Rico, into a politically active pro-independence family. His parents were Diego Corretjer Hernández and María Brígida Montes González. His father and uncles were involved in the "Ciales Uprising" of August 13, 1898, against the United States occupation. As a lad, he would often accompany his father and uncles to political rallies. He received his primary and secondary education in his hometown. In 1920, when he was only 12 years old, Corretjer wrote his first poem "Canto a Ciales" (I sing to Ciales). In 1924, Corretjer published his first booklet of poems. Luis Palés Matos
Luis Palés Matos (March 20, 1898 – February 23, 1959) was a Puerto Rican poet who is credited with creating the poetry genre known as Afro-Antillano. He is also credited with writing the screenplay for the "Romance Tropical", the first Puerto Rican film with sound. Early years Palés Matos was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico into a family of well-known poets. His mother was also a poet as was his father Vicente Palés Anés, who has a school named after him in Guayama. His siblings include Vicente, Gustavo, Consuelo and Josefa. His family was instrumental in his poetic development and is reflected when at the age of 17 he wrote and published his first book of poetry titled "Azaleas" (1915). In high school he edited the school's monthly publication "Mehr Licht". His family's financial situation was bad and he was forced to drop out of high school and earn a living working in various jobs. Boricua En La Luna
"Boricua en la Luna" is originally a poem by Juan Antonio Corretjer. Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Roy Brown popularized it by adapting it to song. It was first featured on the album ''Árboles'', from Brown and Cuban singer Silvio Rodríguez and became one of Brown's most popular songs. Song history On the booklet of Roy Brown's hits album ''Colección'', he writes that the song "could've never been". Brown writes that in the late 70s, Corretjer handed him the lyrics, which he intended to be ''décimas'', to see if Roy could come up with something. Brown, who at the time was moving to New York City, forgot about them. Several years later, when Corretjer died, Brown started looking for the ''décimas'', but had a hard time finding them. A year later, Brown finally found them and says the music came "like a yank". However, he broke his finger playing basketball so he was unable to play it for a year. Anabell López Dominges (born October 23, 1964) is a Cuban singer. Career Dominges belonged to the Nueva trova movement in the same era as Xiomara Laugart, Santiago Feliú and Alberto Tosca. Pablo Milanés
Pablo Milanés Arias (24 February 1943 – 22 November 2022) was a Cuban guitar player and singer. He was one of the founders of the Cuban nueva trova, along with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola. His music, originating in the Trova, Son and other traditional styles of early 20th Century Cuban music, set him apart from the style of Silvio Rodríguez. Silvio Rodríguez Domínguez (born 29 November 1946) is a Cuban musician, and leader of the Nueva Trova movement.
