.amsterdam is a top-level domain for the city of Amsterdam. ICANN gave the City of Amsterdam the permission to operate the domain on 24 July 2014 as a part of its new gTLD programme. The public has been able to register .amsterdam web addresses since September 2015. Usage of the TLD has been very limited and its introduction has been criticised for its lack of cost-effectiveness. In 2019, the number of domains registered under the TLD decreased by 9.1%. Registration Data Access Protocol was enabled for .amsterdam domains in July 2019. Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are one of the categories of top-level domains (TLDs) maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for use in the Domain Name System of the Internet. A top-level domain is the last level of every fully qualified domain name. They are called generic for historical reasons; initially, they were contrasted with country-specific TLDs in RFC 920. The core group of generic top-level domains consists of the com, net, org, biz, and info domains. Registration Data Access Protocol
The Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is a computer network communications protocol standardized by a working group at the Internet Engineering Task Force in 2015, after experimental developments and thorough discussions. It is a successor to the WHOIS protocol, used to look up relevant registration data from such Internet resources as domain names, IP addresses, and autonomous system numbers. While WHOIS essentially retrieves free text, RDAP delivers data in a standard, machine-readable JSON format. In order to accomplish this goal, the output of all operative WHOIS servers was analyzed, taking a census of the labels they used.
