Würm (band)
Würm was a sludge metal band started in 1972 by bass player Chuck Dukowski, who would later join Black Flag. They released one LP on Greg Ginn's SST Records and some tracks on compilations. They were active from 1972 to 1978 and from 1982 to 1983. History Würm began in Hermosa Beach in 1972 when Gary McDaniel, who would later be known as Chuck Dukowski, and guitar player Ed Danky decided to start a band. They shared the vocal duties and came up with the name Würm in 1974. They played parties and went on tour. At the Würmhole, their practice place, they became friends with Keith Morris and Greg Ginn of the band Panic, who became regulars at the Würmhole parties before beginning to live there and practice there too. Lou Hinzo (Loud Lou) joined the band after answering an ad looking for an animalistic drummer. Würm also made money by buying and selling musical equipment. Hermosa Beach
Hermosa Beach (, Spanish language, Spanish for "Beautiful") is a beachfront city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Its population was 19,728 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 U.S. Census. The city is located in the South Bay (Los Angeles County), South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles area; it is one of the three Beach Cities. Hermosa Beach is bordered by the other two, Manhattan Beach, California, Manhattan Beach to the north and Redondo Beach, California, Redondo Beach to the south and east. Greg Ginn
Gregory Regis Ginn ( , born June 8, 1954) is an American musician and songwriter, best known for being the leader, primary songwriter, and the only continuous member of the hardcore punk band Black Flag, which he founded and led from 1976 to 1986, and again in 2003. The band announced another reunion in 2013. Since the breakup of Black Flag, Ginn has recorded solo albums, and performed with such bands as October Faction, Gone, Confront James, Mojack, and others. He was 99th on ''Rolling Stone''s list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Early life Ginn was born June 8, 1954, in Tucson, Arizona. He began an electronics company in Hermosa Beach, California, called Solid State Tuners, when he was 12 years old. He was also an amateur radio operator. Ginn became a vegetarian at 17 years old in 1971 and has been a vegan since 1998. Record Store Day is a semi-annual event established in 2008 to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". Held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November, the day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event. Roderick Edward "Legs" McNeil (born January 27, 1956) is an American music journalist. He is one of the three original founders of the seminal ''Punk'' magazine; as well as being a former editor at ''Spin'' and editor-in-chief of ''Nerve Magazine''. ''Punk'' Magazine At the age of 19, McNeil gathered with two high school friends, John Holmstrom and Ged Dunn, and decided to create "some sort of media thing" for a living. Holmstrom had an idea of combining comics with rock n roll. Later work In 1985, McNeil became a ''SPIN'' magazine staff writer. Keith Morris (born September 18, 1955) is an American singer and songwriter known for his role as frontman of the hardcore punk bands Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Off!. Born and raised in Hermosa Beach, California, he formed Black Flag at the age of 21 with guitarist Greg Ginn and performed on the band's 1979 debut EP ''Nervous Breakdown''. Shortly after leaving Black Flag in 1979, he formed the Circle Jerks with guitarist Greg Hetson; the band released seven albums between 1980 and 1995 and have broken up and reformed on numerous occasions. In 2009 Morris formed the supergroup Off! with guitarist Dimitri Coats, bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and drummer Mario Rubalcaba. Sludge Metal
Sludge metal (also known as sludge doom or simply sludge) is an Extreme metal, extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that combines elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. The genre generally includes slow tempos, down-tuned guitars and nihilistic lyrics discussing poverty, drug addiction and pollution. The sound of sludge metal has its origins in California hardcore punk bands in the early-to-mid-1980s like Black Flag (band), Black Flag, Flipper (band), Flipper and Fang (band), Fang, who began slowing their tempos and embracing the influence of Black Sabbath. This sound was expanded upon by the Melvins towards the end of the decade and the bands they influenced in both the Seattle grunge scene, and in Louisiana with Eyehategod, Crowbar (American band), Crowbar and Acid Bath.
