Wicklow–Wexford (Dáil Constituency)
Wicklow–Wexford is a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from the 2024 general election. The constituency elects three deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries The 2023 report of the Electoral Commission recommended that at the next general election, a new three-seat constituency of Wicklow–Wexford be created, with a transfer of territory from the constituencies of Wexford and Wicklow. This was done to ensure compliance with the constitutional requirement for one TD per 20,000 to 30,000 of the population and with an overall increase from 160 to 174 TDs. Dáil Constituencies
There are 43 multi-member electoral districts, known as Dáil constituencies, to elect 174 Teachta Dála, TDs to Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas, Republic of Ireland, Ireland's parliament, on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV), to a maximum term of five years. The configuration of constituencies was amended by the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2023, which were in operation for the 2024 Irish general election, 2024 general election. Wexford is a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency elects four deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). Boundaries The constituency was created by the Government of Ireland Act 1920 and first used at the 1921 elections electing 4 deputies. Before 2024, it spanned the entire area of County Wexford, taking in Wexford, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Gorey. The Constituency Review Report 2023 of the Electoral Commission recommended that at the next general election, Wexford lose a seat to become a four-seat constituency with the transfer of territory in the north of County Wexford to the new constituency of Wicklow–Wexford. Solidarity (), formerly known as the Anti-Austerity Alliance (AAA), is a Trotskyist political party in Ireland, launched in 2014. An electoral division (ED, ) is a legally defined administrative area in the Republic of Ireland, generally comprising multiple townlands, and formerly a subdivision of urban and rural districts. Electoral (Amendment) Act 2023
The Electoral (Amendment) Act 2023 is a law of Ireland to revise Dáil constituencies and European Parliament constituencies. The revised Dáil constituencies will come into effect on the dissolution of the 33rd Dáil. The dissolution must take place by 19 February 2025; however, the Taoiseach, Simon Harris has indicated an intention to seek a dissolution of the Dáil on 8 November. The 2024 general election for the 34th Dáil will follow thereafter. The revised European Parliament constituencies were used at the 2024 European Parliament election. 2020 Irish General Election
The 2020 Irish general election took place on Saturday 8 February, to elect the 33rd Dáil, the lower house of Ireland's parliament. The election was called following the dissolution of the 32nd Dáil by the president, at the request of the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, on 14 January 2020. The members, Teachtaí Dála (TDs), were elected by single transferable vote in multi-seat constituencies. It was the first election since 1918 to be held on a weekend. Following the election, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil entered into a historic coalition government. The election was an unprecedented three-way race, with the three largest parties each winning a share of the vote between 20% and 25%. The Electoral Commission () is an election commission with responsibility for the oversight of all elections in Ireland, including electoral operations, constituency reviews and electoral integrity. The single transferable vote (STV) or proportional-ranked choice voting (P-RCV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which each voter casts a single vote in the form of a ranked ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternative preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated or elected with surplus votes, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. STV aims to approach proportional representation based on votes cast in the district where it is used, so that each vote is worth about the same as another. Proportional representation (PR) refers to any electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions (Political party, political parties) among voters. The aim of such systems is that all votes cast contribute to the result so that each representative in an assembly is mandated by a roughly equal number of voters, and therefore all votes have equal weight. Under other election systems, a bare Plurality (voting), plurality or a scant majority in a district are all that are used to elect a member or group of members. PR systems provide balanced representation to different factions, usually defined by parties, reflecting how votes were cast.
