Waterloo Township is one of the fourteen townships of Athens County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 2,352 people in the township. Geography Located in the western part of the county, it borders the following townships: * York Township - north * Dover Township - northeast corner * Athens Township - east * Alexander Township - southeast corner * Lee Township - south * Knox Township, Vinton County - southwest corner * Brown Township, Vinton County - west * Starr Township, Hocking County - northwest corner No municipalities are located in Waterloo Township, although three unincorporated communities lie in the township: New Marshfield in the center, Carbondale in the township's northwest, and Mineral in the west-center of the township. Moonville Rail-Trail
King Switch Tunnel The Moonville Rail-Trail is a ten-mile (16 kilometer) rail-trail in southeast Ohio, located in Vinton and Athens Counties. It is largely embedded in the Zaleski State Forest and passes close to Lake Hope State Park. The trail is named after the Moonville Tunnel through which it passes. The trail is built on the grade of a railroad originally built as part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which ran between its namesake cities. The M&C was acquired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad becoming its Southwestern Division. The B&O was merged into the Chessie System Railroads, which was then merged into CSX Transportation. CSX abandoned parts and sold parts of the old M&C line in stages during the late 1980s. Track was removed from the abandoned sections. Zaleski State Forest
Zaleski State Forest is a state forest in the U.S. state of Ohio, located primarily in Vinton County, with areas in Athens County as well. The 28,000 acre (110 km²) forest surrounds Lake Hope State Park in Vinton County, and borders the Waterloo Wildlife Research Station in Athens County. Part of the Zaleski Mound Group, a group of Native American mounds built by the prehistoric Adena culture, is located within the forest. The Waterloo Wildlife Research Station is a Ohio state wildlife area located in western Waterloo Township, Athens County, Ohio. Purchase for the area was begun in 1944. The area was greatly expanded in 2005 when 945 acres were added. It was originally named the Waterloo Wildlife Experiment Station. Research was done there over a period of years, until recently.
