Mineral is an unincorporated community in Athens County, Ohio, United States. Centered on State Route 356, it was established as a coal mining community. It is located on Mud Lick Run, which flows into nearby Hewitt Fork, a tributary of Raccoon Creek. The B&O Railroad once ran through the community, but was abandoned in the 1980s. In recent years, the portion of the old railroad grade going west from the community has become the Moonville Rail-Trail King Switch Tunnel The Moonville Rail-Trail is a ten-mile (16 kilometer) rail-trail in southeast Ohio, located in Vinton and Athens Counties. Ohio State Route 356
State Route 356 (SR 356) is a state highway in southeastern Ohio. The route connects US 50 in the Knox Township, Vinton County community of Bolins Mills to SR 56 in Waterloo Township, Athens County. Route description The route begins at an intersection with US 50 near the Raccoon Creek. It heads north through the Raccoon Creek valley occasionally acting as the border of the Zaleski State Forest. After approximately , the creek and SR 356 diverge as the road heads north at the bottom of narrow valleys. Eventually, the route ascends out of the valleys and travels on a ridge as it exits Vinton County and enters Athens County. B&O Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the oldest railroad in the United States and the first steam-operated common carrier. Construction of the line began in 1828, and it operated as B&O from 1830 until 1987, when it was merged into the Chessie System. Its lines are today controlled by CSX Transportation. Founded to serve merchants from Baltimore who wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains, the railroad competed with several existing and proposed turnpikes and canals, including the Erie and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The railroad began operation in 1830 on a 13-mile line between Baltimore and Elliot's Mill in Maryland. Horse-drawn cars were replaced by steam locomotives the following year. Moonville Rail-Trail
King Switch Tunnel The Moonville Rail-Trail is a ten-mile (16 kilometer) rail-trail in southeast Ohio, located in Vinton and Athens Counties. It is largely embedded in the Zaleski State Forest and passes close to Lake Hope State Park. The trail is named after the Moonville Tunnel through which it passes. The trail is built on the grade of a railroad originally built as part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which ran between its namesake cities. The M&C was acquired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad becoming its Southwestern Division. The B&O was merged into the Chessie System Railroads, which was then merged into CSX Transportation.
