The United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (German: Vereinigte Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche Deutschlands, VELKD) was founded on July 8, 1948, in Eisenach, Germany. Its total membership is 8.6 million people. The Member Churches of this organization are in full fellowship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). All its member churches belong to the Evangelical Church in Germany, with which it co-operates closely. It has recently been reduced from an independent legal entity to an administrative unit within the larger Evangelical Church in Germany. The seat of the VELKD is in Hanover. Eisenach
Eisenach () is a town in Thuringia, Germany with 42,000 inhabitants, located west of Erfurt, southeast of Kassel and northeast of Frankfurt. It is the main urban centre of western Thuringia and bordering northeastern Hessian regions, situated near the former Inner German border. A major attraction is Wartburg castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Eisenach was an early capital of Thuringia in the 12th and 13th centuries. St. Elizabeth lived at the court of the Ludowingians here between 1211 and 1228. Later, Martin Luther came to Eisenach and translated the Bible into German. In 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was born here. During the early modern period, Eisenach was a residence of the Ernestine Wettins and was visited by numerous representatives of Weimar classicism like Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Johannes Friedrich (bishop)
Johannes Friedrich (born June 20, 1948 in Bielefeld-Gadderbaum) is German Lutheran theologian and was a German Lutheran bishop. Education and career Friedrich studied theology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and at the University of Tübingen, was reverend in Nuremberg, campus minister at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and German Lutheran Provost at Redeemer Church in Jerusalem. He is a member of the EKD Council of the Protestant Church in Germany, since 1999 ''Landesbischof'' (bishop) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and from 2005 leading bishop of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany. Friedrich worked on a Lutheran/Catholic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JD) and supports the Christian–Islamic dialogue in order to cause the Christian–Islamic understanding. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche in Norddeutschland) is a Lutheran member church of the Evangelical Church in Germany (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland, EKD). It was established on 27 May 2012 as a merger of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg, and the Pomeranian Evangelical Church.
