Undangs
An Undang is a ruling chief or territorial chief who still play an important role in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The name is believed to be derived from the Malay word ''undang-undang'' meaning "law". The Minangkabau who settled at Negeri Sembilan, in present-day Malaysia at the end of the 17th century ruled by a ''"penghulu"'' or headman who was chosen from the noble families of Sakai and Jakun called Biduanda. These ''"penghulus"'', notably that of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau became powerful enough to exalt themselves above other ''"penghulus"''. These penghulus later acknowledged by the Sultan of the old Johor Empire as a sovereign in their own territory. By the early part of the 18th Century, the leaders of these four territories started calling themselves "Undang". Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Of Negeri Sembilan
Yamtuan, also known officially as Yang di-Pertuan Besar and unofficially as Grand Ruler, is the royal title of the ruler of the Malaysian state of Negeri Sembilan. The Grand Ruler of Negeri Sembilan is elected by a council of ruling chiefs in the state, or the ''Undangs''. This royal practice has been followed since 1773. The Yamtuan Besar is elected from among the four leading princes of Negeri Sembilan (''Putera Yang Empat''); the Undangs themselves cannot stand for election and their choice of a ruler is limited to a male Muslim who is Malay and also a "lawfully begotten descendant of Raja Radin ibni Raja Lenggang", the 4th Yamtuan. This unique form of government later inspired the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, to implement a form of rotational constitutional monarchy for a newly independent Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia). Negeri Sembilan
Negeri Sembilan (, Negeri Sembilan Malay: ''Nogoghi Sombilan'', ''Nismilan'') is a state in Malaysia which lies on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It borders Selangor on the north, Pahang in the east, and Malacca and Johor to the south. The name is believed to derive from the nine (''sembilan'') villages or '' nagari'' in the Minangkabau language (now known as ''luak'') settled by the Minangkabau, a people originally from West Sumatra (in present-day Indonesia). Minangkabau features are still visible today in traditional architecture and the dialect of Malay spoken. Unlike the hereditary monarchs of the other royal Malay states, the ruler of Negeri Sembilan is elected and is known as ''Yang di-Pertuan Besar'' instead of Sultan. Minangkabau People
Minangkabau people ( min, Urang Minang; Indonesian or Malay: ''Orang Minangkabau'' or ''Minangkabo''; Jawi: منڠكبو), also known as Minang, are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Minangkabau's West Sumatran homelands was the seat of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, believed by early historians to have been the cradle of the Malay race, and the location of the Padri War (1821 to 1837). Minangkabau are the ethnic majority in West Sumatra and Negeri Sembilan. Minangkabau are also a recognised minority in other parts of Indonesia as well as Malaysia, Singapore and the Netherlands. Malay Ruler
The Conference of Rulers (also Council of Rulers or Durbar, ms, Majlis Raja-Raja; Jawi: ) in Malaysia is a council comprising the nine rulers of the Malay states, and the governors or ''Yang di-Pertua Negeri'' of the other four states. It was officially established by Article 38 of the Constitution of Malaysia, and is the only such institution in the world, according to the Malaysian National Library. Its main responsibility is the election of the ''Yang di-Pertuan Agong'' (King) and their deputy, the ''Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong'', which occurs every five years or when the positions fall vacant (either through death, resignation, or removal from office). Matrilineal
Matrilineality is the tracing of kinship through the female line. It may also correlate with a social system in which each person is identified with their matriline – their mother's Lineage (anthropology), lineage – and which can involve the inheritance of property and/or titles. A matriline is a line of descent from a female ancestor to a Kinship, descendant (of either sex) in which the individuals in all intervening generations are mothersin other words, a "mother line". Dato' Haji Muhamad Sharip bin Haji Othman, DTNS, 11th ''Dato' Lela Maharaja'' (born 14 August 1941 at Chembong Kecil, Rembau), is the 21st and current Undang of Luak Rembau. Muhamad is a direct descendant of the Dato' Lela Maharaja Suku Biduanda, of the Waris Nan Dua Carak (Perut Tebat) a sub-clan of the Biduanda clan. He is the head of the Waris Jakun lineage (who hold the hereditary title of ''Dato' Lela Maharaja''); the other noble lineage of Rembau is the Waris Jawa (who hold the hereditary title of Dato' Sedia di-Raja).
