Ungmennafélag Kjalnesinga (, ), commonly known as UMFK, is an Icelandic multi-sports club based in Kjalarnes, Reykjavík, in the capital area of Iceland. The club fields departments in athletics, basketball, football, and swimming. It was founded on 26 May 1938. Basketball The club fields junior teams and a senior women's team. The clubs girls junior teams where featured in the 2021 documentary '' Raise the bar''. Women's basketball The club fielded a women's basketball team in collaboration with Aþena Basketball, named Aþena-UMFK, in the second-tier 1. deild kvenna and the Icelandic Cup. After initially being allowed to play their home games at the Álftanes stadium for the 2021–2022 season, the team was denied its use by Garðabær officials at the behest of rival club Stjarnan. Úrvalsdeild kvenna (English: Women's Premier League), known as Bónus deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest basketball competition among women's clubs in Iceland. Akranes
Akranes () is a port town and municipality on the west coast of Iceland, around north of the capital Reykjavík. The area where Akranes is located was settled in the 9th century; however, it did not receive a municipal charter until 1942. History Akranes was settled in the 9th century by the brothers Þormóður and Ketill, sons of Bresi, who came from Ireland. The town started to form in the mid-17th century as a fishing village. Stjarnan Women's Basketball
The Stjarnan women's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. History In 2009, disgruntled Ármann players, unhappy with poor training facilities and lack of practice time, contacted Stjarnan and inquired if the board would be interested in starting a women's team. The board responded positively and in the end the entire Ármann team transferred over. Garðabær () is a town and municipality in the Capital Region of Iceland. History Garðabær is a growing town in the Capital Region. It is the fifth largest municipality in Iceland with a population of 20,116 (1 January 2025). The site of Garðabær has been inhabited since Iceland was first settled in the 9th century. Landnámabók, the Book of Settlement, tells of two farms on the site of Garðabær: Vífilsstaðir and Skúlastaðir. Álftanes () is the name of a town and a collection of small peninsulas in Iceland. It means ''swan peninsula''. The best known of these peninsulas extrudes from the eastern part of Reykjanes with the town of the same name in the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region of Iceland. The Icelandic Women's Basketball Cup (Icelandic: Bikarkeppni KKÍ) is an annual basketball competition between clubs in Iceland. It is Iceland's first-tier cup competition, and is not to be confused with Iceland's former second-tier cup competition, the Company Cup. History and format The first edition of the Icelandic Women's Cup championship was held in 1975 and won by Þór Akureyri. All the rounds are played with a single game knockout format. The final four and the finals are played over a single weekend.
