Aþena Basketball
Aþena Basketball is an Icelandic basketball club. The club fields junior teams and a senior women's team. The clubs girls junior teams where featured in the 2021 documentary '' Raise the bar''. Its women's senior team will play in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna in the 2024–25 season. History The club was founded in 2019 and first fielded a women's senior team in 2021, named Aþena-UMFK in partnership with Ungmennafélag Kjalnesinga, that played in the second-tier 1. deild kvenna and in the Icelandic Cup. After initially being allowed to play their home games at the Álftanes stadium for the 2021–2022 season, the team was denied its use by Garðabær officials at the behest of rival club Stjarnan. Breiðholt
Breiðholt () is a southeastern district of Reykjavík, Iceland. It includes three neighbourhoods: ''Neðra-Breiðholt'' (Bakkar , Mjódd and Stekkir ), ''Efra-Breiðholt'' (Hólar , Berg and Fell ) and ''Seljahverfi'' (Sel ). Álftanes
Álftanes () is the name of a town and a collection of small peninsulas in Iceland. It means ''swan peninsula''. The best known of these peninsulas extrudes from the eastern part of Reykjanes with the town of the same name in the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region of Iceland. The municipality of Álftanes was merged into the neighboring municipality of Garðabær in January 2013. Álftanes had a population of 2,484 as of January 2011. Jordan Kalere Danberry (born 25 June 1997) is an American basketball player. She played college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. College career Danberry started her college career with Arkansas in 2015 but in January 2017, she transferred to Mississippi State. She finished her college career with Mississippi State in 2020 where she earned SEC All-Defensive Team and second-team All-SEC honors. Club career In 2022, she played for the Mississippi Lady Lakers. Fanney Lind Thomas
Fanney Lind Guðmundsdóttir Thomas (born 13 December 1989) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She is a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Career Fanney came up through the junior ranks of Hamar, playing her first senior match during the 2007–2008 season. She was a key player on the Hamar team that advanced to the 2010 Úrvalsdeild kvenna finals where it lost to KR in five games. In 2011, she joined French club Union Sportive de La Glacerie. She spent the next three seasons with Fjölnir, Hamar and Valur before signing with Þór Akureyri in 1. deild kvenna prior to the 2015-2016 season. She was named to the Domestic All-First Team after averaging 13.4 and 7.9 rebounds per game for the season. Akranes
Akranes () is a port town and municipality on the west coast of Iceland, around north of the capital Reykjavík. The area where Akranes is located was settled in the 9th century; however, it did not receive a municipal charter until 1942. History Akranes was settled in the 9th century by the brothers Þormóður and Ketill, sons of Bresi, who came from Ireland. The town started to form in the mid-17th century as a fishing village. In 1942, it was formally chartered, and in the following years it had the biggest surge in population in its history. The Stjarnan women's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. History In 2009, disgruntled Ármann players, unhappy with poor training facilities and lack of practice time, contacted Stjarnan and inquired if the board would be interested in starting a women's team. The board responded positively and in the end the entire Ármann team transferred over. Garðabær () is a town and municipality in the Capital Region of Iceland. History Garðabær is a growing town in the Capital Region. It is the fifth largest municipality in Iceland with a population of 20,116 (1 January 2025). The site of Garðabær has been inhabited since Iceland was first settled in the 9th century. Landnámabók, the Book of Settlement, tells of two farms on the site of Garðabær: Vífilsstaðir and Skúlastaðir. Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson (born 17 September 1973) is an Icelandic businessman, basketball coach and former player. He played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla and was a member of the Icelandic national team. Following his basketball career, he founded the company Sideline Sports which designed coaching software used by the Premier League, NBA and the NFL. Icelandic Women's Basketball Cup
The Icelandic Women's Basketball Cup (Icelandic: Bikarkeppni KKÍ) is an annual basketball competition between clubs in Iceland. It is Iceland's first-tier cup competition, and is not to be confused with Iceland's former second-tier cup competition, the Company Cup. History and format The first edition of the Icelandic Women's Cup championship was held in 1975 and won by Þór Akureyri. All the rounds are played with a single game knockout format. The final four and the finals are played over a single weekend. Finally, the winner of the Icelandic Cup championship, or the runner-up if the same team wins both the cup and national championship, will then face the winner of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna championship in a single game to determine the winner of the Icelandic Supercup championship in the beginning of the next season.
