The Ernesto
The Ernesto (''L'Ernesto'') was a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party in Italy. The group emerged in February 2007 as a split from Being Communists, the faction led by Claudio Grassi, and took the name from ''L'Ernesto'', a communist publication. The leaders of the splinter group were Fosco Giannini, a senator at the time, and Gianluigi Pegolo. In the run-up of the July 2008 congress the faction formed a common list with Counter-current, another minority faction, and obtained 7.7% of the delegates. In that occasion they supported the election of Paolo Ferrero, leader of the Refoundation in Movement-Being Communists motion, as party secretary, thus joining for the first time the majority of the party. Communist Refoundation Party
The Communist Refoundation Party ( it, Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, PRC) is a communist political party in Italy that emerged from a split of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1991. The party's secretary is Maurizio Acerbo, who replaced Paolo Ferrero in 2017. Armando Cossutta was the party's founder, while Fausto Bertinotti its longest-serving leader (1994–2008). The latter transformed the PRC from a traditional communist party into a collection of radical social movements. The PRC is a member of the Party of the European Left (PEL), of which Bertinotti was the inaugural president in 2004. Being Communists
Being Communists (''Essere Comunisti'') was a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party in Italy. It was formed in 1998 by former followers of Armando Cossutta, who left the party in 1998 to form the Party of Italian Communists. The leader of the group was Claudio Grassi (politician), Claudio Grassi. The faction was the "traditionalist" wing of the party: it did not agree with what it considered an excessive criticism of real socialism, the Soviet Union and the Italian Communist Party. As proud communists, the group members were not generally keen on the party's participation to the European Left. In 2005 the group obtained the 26.5% of the delegates to the VI national congress of the party, while two years later it suffered the split of some hard-liners led by Fosco Giannini, who set up The Ernesto. Claudio Grassi (politician)
Claudio Grassi (born 12 November 1955 in Reggio Emilia) is an Italian politician. Biography In 1973 Grassi started working in the factory as a worker, remaining there until 1992. In these years he was a trade union delegate in the CGIL. In his city, Reggio Emilia, he was promoter of the Italy-Nicaragua Association and of the Association for Peace and was also responsible for cultural activities and vice-president of the Antonio Gramsci club. He was therefore elected municipal councilor for the Italian Communist Party in the municipality of Bibbiano and appointed assessor for culture. In 1991 he joined the Communist Refoundation Party, of which he became regional secretary in 1993. In 1995 he was elected to the national secretariat of the party, where he remained until 2004, holding the position of national treasurer. Counter-current (Italy)
Countercurrent ( it, Controcorrente) is a small Italian Trotskyist political group. It used to be a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party. The group emerged in 2006 as a split from Communist Project, when their leader Marco Ferrando decided to leave the party in order to form his own Workers' Communist Party. For the 24–27 July 2008 congress the faction formed a common list with The Ernesto, another minority faction, and obtained 7.7% of the delegates. In that occasion they supported the election of Paolo Ferrero, leader of the Refoundation in Movement-Being Communists motion, as party secretary, thus joining for the first time the majority of the party. Paolo Ferrero
Paolo Ferrero (born 17 November 1960) is an Italian politician. He is a leading member of the Communist Refoundation Party (''Partito della Rifondazione Comunista''; PRC), and served as Minister of Social Solidarity from 2006 to 2008 as part of the Prodi II Cabinet. Career Ferrero was born in Pomaretto, in the province of Turin. A former FIAT worker, his political commitment began at the age of 17, when he joined Proletarian Democracy (''Democrazia Proletaria''; DP). Unlike the majority of his party, Ferrero is religious and is a member of the Waldensian Evangelical Church, and was the leader of the youth evangelical Waldensian federation before fully entering politics in 1987. Refoundation in Movement ( it, Rifondazione in Movimento) was a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party in Italy. In April 2008, following the severe defeat of the party in the 2008 general election, a group of former , composed basically of former members of Proletarian Democracy and led by Paolo Ferrero and Giovanni Russo Spena, criticized The Left – The Rainbow alliance and the political line of Fausto Bertinotti. In that occasion they allied with the other minority factions in order to force Secretary Franco Giordano to resign. The group named "Refoundation in Movement" joined forces with Being Communists, the largest minority faction in the 2005 national congress with 26.3%, and obtained the 40.1% of the vote of party members in local congresses. The Party of Italian Communists ( it, Partito dei Comunisti Italiani, PdCI) was a communist party in Italy established in October 1998 by splinters from the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC).
