Being Communists
Being Communists (''Essere Comunisti'') was a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party in Italy. It was formed in 1998 by former followers of Armando Cossutta, who left the party in 1998 to form the Party of Italian Communists. The leader of the group was Claudio Grassi (politician), Claudio Grassi. The faction was the "traditionalist" wing of the party: it did not agree with what it considered an excessive criticism of real socialism, the Soviet Union and the Italian Communist Party. As proud communists, the group members were not generally keen on the party's participation to the European Left. In 2005 the group obtained the 26.5% of the delegates to the VI national congress of the party, while two years later it suffered the split of some hard-liners led by Fosco Giannini, who set up The Ernesto. Communist Refoundation Party
The Communist Refoundation Party ( it, Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, PRC) is a communist political party in Italy that emerged from a split of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1991. The party's secretary is Maurizio Acerbo, who replaced Paolo Ferrero in 2017. Armando Cossutta was the party's founder, while Fausto Bertinotti its longest-serving leader (1994–2008). The latter transformed the PRC from a traditional communist party into a collection of radical social movements. The PRC is a member of the Party of the European Left (PEL), of which Bertinotti was the inaugural president in 2004. The PRC has not been represented in the Italian Parliament since 2008, but had a member of the European Parliament, Eleonora Forenza, who sat with the European United Left–Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) group in 2014–2019. Bertinottiani
The Bertinottiani were an Italian political faction around Fausto Bertinotti, the leader of the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC) from 1994 to 2006. In 1998, in the wake of the crisis of Romano Prodi's first government, Bertinotti convinced the majority of the party to stop supporting the cabinet, provoking the split of the faction led by Armando Cossutta, PRC's founder, who launched the Party of Italian Communists (PdCI). That was when the Bertinottiani took the helm of the party. Bertinotti, who had been secretary since 1993, become the uncontested leader and the Bertinottiani would dominate the party for ten years. Left Ecology Freedom
Left Ecology Freedom ( it, Sinistra Ecologia Libertà, SEL) was a democratic socialist political party in Italy whose bulk was formed by former members of the Communist Refoundation Party. The party's leader was Nichi Vendola, a former President of Apulia. On 17 December 2016, SEL dissolved into Italian Left, which was officially launched as a party in early 2017. Franco Giordano
Francesco "Franco" Giordano (born 26 August 1957) is an Italian politician. Born in Bari, he became a member of the Italian Communist Party in 1974. From 1985 to 1987 he was member of the national leadership of Federation of Young Italian Communists, and, from 1987 to 1991, of the local PCI leadership of the province of Bari. When the latter was turned into the more social democratic-oriented Democratic Party of the Left, Giordano moved to the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC). In 1992 Giordano became a national leader of PRC and, in 1996, he was elected for the first time at the Italian Chamber of Deputies. His seat was confirmed in the 2001 and 2006 elections. Refoundation in Movement ( it, Rifondazione in Movimento) was a faction within the Communist Refoundation Party in Italy. In April 2008, following the severe defeat of the party in the 2008 general election, a group of former , composed basically of former members of Proletarian Democracy and led by Paolo Ferrero and Giovanni Russo Spena, criticized The Left – The Rainbow alliance and the political line of Fausto Bertinotti. In that occasion they allied with the other minority factions in order to force Secretary Franco Giordano to resign. The group named "Refoundation in Movement" joined forces with Being Communists, the largest minority faction in the 2005 national congress with 26.3%, and obtained the 40.1% of the vote of party members in local congresses. Fausto Bertinotti
Fausto Bertinotti (born 22 March 1940) is an Italian politician who led the Communist Refoundation Party (''Partito della Rifondazione Comunista'') from 1994 to 2006. On 29 April 2006, after the centre-left coalition's victory in the Italian general election, he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies, a position he held until 2008. Trade unionist Bertinotti was born to Enrico Bertinotti, a railroad engineer, and Rosa Bertinotti. After completing his education in Milan, he joined the CGIL (General Confederation of Italian Labour) in 1964, becoming secretary of the local organisation of the Federazione Italiana degli Operai Tessili (Italian Textile Workers Federation). The Left – The Rainbow ( it, La Sinistra – L'Arcobaleno, SA), frequently referred as Rainbow Left ( it, Sinistra Arcobaleno), was a left-wing federation of parties in Italy that participated in the 2008 general election. Paolo Ferrero
Paolo Ferrero (born 17 November 1960) is an Italian politician. He is a leading member of the Communist Refoundation Party (''Partito della Rifondazione Comunista''; PRC), and served as Minister of Social Solidarity from 2006 to 2008 as part of the Prodi II Cabinet. Career Ferrero was born in Pomaretto, in the province of Turin. A former FIAT worker, his political commitment began at the age of 17, when he joined Proletarian Democracy (''Democrazia Proletaria''; DP). Unlike the majority of his party, Ferrero is religious and is a member of the Waldensian Evangelical Church, and was the leader of the youth evangelical Waldensian federation before fully entering politics in 1987. Proletarian Democracy ( it, Democrazia Proletaria, DP) was a far-left political party in Italy. History 1970s DP was founded in 1975 as a joint electoral front of the Proletarian Unity Party (Italy), Proletarian Unity Party (PdUP), Workers Vanguard (AO) and the "Workers Movement for Socialism" (MLS), for the 1975 Italian regional elections. 2008 Italian General Election
A snap election was held in Italy on 13–14 April 2008. The election came after President Giorgio Napolitano dissolved the Italian Parliament on 6 February 2008, following the defeat of the government of Prime Minister Romano Prodi in a January 2008 Senate vote of confidence and the unsuccessful tentative appointment of Franco Marini with the aim to change the current electoral law.
