Transcontinental Traverse
The Transcontinental Traverse (TCT) was a geodetic survey Traverse (surveying), traverse conducted in the continental United States by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey between 1961 and 1970 and the U.S. National Geodetic Survey between 1970 and 1976. It was the most accurate large-area survey ever done prior to Global Positioning System surveys. TCT included over 2,700 survey stations, covered over , and passed through 44 U.S. states. This nationwide survey increased the accuracy of the existing U.S. survey network. It was also fundamental to the sophisticated mathematical readjustment of the nation's survey network known as the North American Datum of 1983. It was the "end of an era" as the last conventional, purely terrestrial large scale survey. Bilby Tower
A Bilby tower is a type of Surveying, survey tower made from steel and used by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) from 1927 to 1984. It is named after Jasper S. Bilby who designed it in 1926. In 1927, Herbert Hoover, then the Secretary of Commerce, commended Bilby's tower "for its cost and time efficiency" and cited the surveyor's service as "essential to the United States government". History Jasper S. Bilby (1864–1949) was a surveyor employed by the USC&GS from 1884 to 1937. He served as Chief Signalman of the USC&GS from 1930 to 1937. Born in Rush County, Indiana, he later moved to a homestead near Osgood, Indiana, Osgood. Salmon, Idaho
Salmon is a city in Lemhi County, Idaho. The population was 3,119 at the 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Lemhi County. History The Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the Continental Divide at Lemhi Pass, to the southeast of Salmon.
