Sugaree
"Sugaree" is a song written by long-time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter (lyricist), Robert Hunter and composed by guitarist Jerry Garcia. It was written for Jerry Garcia's first solo album ''Garcia (album), Garcia'', which was released in January 1972. As with the songs on the rest of the album, Garcia plays every instrument himself (except drums, played by Bill Kreutzmann), including acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and an electric guitar played through a Leslie speaker. Released as a single from the ''Garcia'' album, "Sugaree" peaked at #94 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in April 1972 and was Garcia's only single ever on that chart. The song was first performed live by the Grateful Dead on July 31, 1971, at the Yale Bowl at Yale University, as was the song "Mister Charlie, Mr. Charlie". ''Garcia'' is Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia's first solo album, released in 1972. Warner Bros. Records offered the Grateful Dead the opportunity to cut their own solo records, and ''Garcia'' was released around the same time as Bob Weir's ''Ace'' and Mickey Hart's '' Rolling Thunder''. Unlike ''Ace'', which was practically a Grateful Dead album, ''Garcia'' was more of a solo effort, as Garcia played almost all the instrumental parts. Six tracks (specifically those coauthored by lyricist Robert Hunter) eventually became standards in the Grateful Dead concert repertoire. Some reprints of the album are self-released. ''Day of the Dead'' is the twenty-fifth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Featuring fifty-nine exclusive recordings of Cover version, covers of Grateful Dead songs by a number of Independent record label, independent artists as a tribute to the band, the compilation was released on May 20, 2016 as five CDs, a limited edition vinyl LP box set, and as a Music download, digital download. ''Dick's Picks Volume 3'' is the third live album in the Dick's Picks series by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded on May 22, 1977 at the Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines, Florida. It was released in November 1995 on Grateful Dead Records. ''Dick's Picks Volume 3'' was again released, by Grateful Dead Productions, in November 2005 as a digital download. The track "Sugaree" was also used on the promotional sampler ''A Glimpse of the Vault'', released in 1996. Elizabeth Cotten
Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten ( Nevills; January 5, 1893 – June 29, 1987) was an American folk and blues musician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down. This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking". Jerry Garcia
Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician best known for being the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. Although he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader of the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. One From The Vault
''One from the Vault'' is a live album by the Grateful Dead, recorded on August 13, 1975 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, California, and released April 15, 1991 on Grateful Dead Records, the personal record label of the band. The concert was broadcast on FM radio, widely traded by fans on cassettes, and sold in bootleg LP versions under the titles ''Urubouros Deedni Mublasaron'' and ''Make Believe Ballroom''. But it was not until the Grateful Dead released it on their eponymous record label, Grateful Dead Records, that high quality versions of the songs appeared. It was the first complete concert recording released commercially by the band. The concert also marked the first time that the then recently released album ''Blues for Allah'' was performed live in its entirety, albeit with a few other songs thrown in. Robert Hunter (lyricist)
Robert C. Christie Hunter (born Robert Burns; June 23, 1941 – September 23, 2019) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, translator, and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. Born near San Luis Obispo, California, Hunter spent some time in his childhood in foster homes, as a result of his father's abandoning his family, and took refuge in reading and writing. He attended the University of Connecticut for a year before returning to Palo Alto, where he became friends with Jerry Garcia. Garcia and Hunter began a collaboration that lasted through the remainder of Garcia's life. Garcia and others formed the Grateful Dead in 1965, and some time later began working with lyrics that Hunter had written. Garcia invited him to join the band as a lyricist, and Hunter contributed substantially to many of their albums, beginning with ''Aoxomoxoa'' in 1969. Fred Neil (March 16, 1936 – July 7, 2001) was an American folk singer-songwriter active in the 1960s and early 1970s. He did not achieve commercial success as a performer and is mainly known through other people's recordings of his material – particularly " Everybody's Talkin", which became a hit for Harry Nilsson after it was used in the film ''Midnight Cowboy'' in 1969. The Persuasions
The Persuasions are an American a cappella group that began singing together in Brooklyn, New York in the mid-1960s. The Persuasions were formed in Brooklyn in 1962, singing a cappella under corner streetlights and in subway corridors. Their style combined gospel, soul, early rock and jazz into melodic five-part harmonies. Since being discovered by Frank Zappa, The Persuasions have recorded 23 albums to date. Career The Persuasions appeared on such public affairs television shows as ''Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant'' on WNEW-TV and '' Like It Is'' on WABC-TV in 1968. Cujo
''Cujo'' () is a 1981 psychological horror novel by American writer Stephen King about a rabid Saint Bernard. The novel won the British Fantasy Award in 1982 and was made into a film in 1983. Background Cujo's name was based on the alias of Willie Wolfe, one of the men responsible for orchestrating Patty Hearst's kidnapping and indoctrination into the Symbionese Liberation Army. Stephen King discusses ''Cujo'' in '' On Writing'', referring to it as a novel he "barely remembers writing at all." King wrote the book during the height of his struggle with alcohol addiction.
