Samson (Emly Starr Song)
Belgium was represented by Emly Starr, with the song "Samson", at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Dublin on 4 April. Before Eurovision Eurosong The Belgian preselection consisted of three heats, followed by the final on 7 March 1981. All the shows took place at the Amerikaans Theater in Brussels, hosted by Luc Appermont. Future Belgian representatives Stella Maessen ( 1982) and Liliane Saint-Pierre (1987) also took part in the selection. Heats Three heats were held with twelve songs in each, from which the top ten songs across the heats went forward to the final. The songs were not voted on at the time, but after the final heat a recap of all 36 songs was broadcast and viewers were then invited to vote for ten of the songs. Voting took place by the unusual means of filling out and submitting a lottery-style form. Emly Starr
Emly Starr (born 5 September 1957 in Laarne, Belgium; birth name Marie-Christine Mareels) is a Belgian disco singer. She also appeared in the documentary film ''Santiago Lovers'' by Romano Ferrari. She has participated in several dance and song contests. In the World Popular Song Festival at Tokyo in 1980 with the entry "Mary Brown", she was finalist as Emly Starr Explosion. Starr entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1981, where she performed "Samson" and finished in 13th place. In 1985, she appeared in the role of Erika in the film ''Jumping'' (Dutch: ''Springen'') directed by Jean-Pierre De Decker, a film which was submitted to the 59th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but not nominated, where she sang the song "Jump in the Dark", that was in the film's soundtrack. 1981 Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision Song Contest 1981 was the 26th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following the country's victory at the with the song "What's Another Year" by Johnny Logan. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (RTÉ), the contest was held at the RDS Simmonscourt on 4 April 1981, and was hosted by Irish television journalist Doireann Ní Bhriain. Twenty countries participated in the contest, equalling the record of the 1978 edition. Cyprus made their début this year, while Israel and Yugoslavia both returned to the competition, after their one-year and five-year absences, respectively. Stella Maessen (born 6 August 1953 in Zandvoort, North Holland) is a Dutch singer, best known for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1970, 1977 and 1982. Hearts of Soul In 1969 Maessen and her older sisters Patricia and Bianca formed a group, calling themselves Hearts of Soul. Liliane Saint-Pierre (born Liliane Louise Keuninckx, 18 December 1948) is a Belgian pop singer. Hailing from Flanders, she sings mostly in Dutch. She competed at Eurovision Song Contest 1987 with the song " Soldiers of Love". Biography Liliane Saint-Pierre was born in Molenstede, Flemish Brabant, as Liliane Keuninckx. Jacky Lafon (born 21 November 1946) is a Flemish actress known for playing one of the lead fictional charactersin the television series ''Familie'' that aired its first episode on the Flemish television channel VTM, in the Dutch language, on 30 December 1991. Claire Vanhonnacker
Claire Vanhonnacker (Waregem, 17 October 1953 – Buggenhout, 8 November 1992), also known by her artist name Claire, was a Belgian singer. She is best known for her Dutch interpretation of Larry Weiss’ Rhinestone Cowboy as ‘Vreemde Vogels’ and ‘Op de purp’re hei’. She lived in Deerlijk.
