Emly Starr
Emly Starr (born 5 September 1957 in Laarne, Belgium; birth name Marie-Christine Mareels) is a Belgian disco singer. She also appeared in the documentary film ''Santiago Lovers'' by Romano Ferrari. She has participated in several dance and song contests. In the World Popular Song Festival at Tokyo in 1980 with the entry "Mary Brown", she was finalist as Emly Starr Explosion. Starr entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1981, where she performed "Samson" and finished in 13th place. In 1985, she appeared in the role of Erika in the film ''Jumping'' (Dutch: ''Springen'') directed by Jean-Pierre De Decker, a film which was submitted to the 59th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but not nominated, where she sang the song "Jump in the Dark", that was in the film's soundtrack. Laarne
Laarne () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of and Laarne proper. On 1 January 2018, Laarne had a total population of 12,487. The total area is 32.07 km². The current mayor of Laarne is Ignace De Baerdemaecker, from the VLD (Liberal) party. History The village lies to the east of Ghent, near a former course of the River the Scheldt and is notable for its castle. The castle dates from the twelfth and later centuries, notably, the seventeenth, and has been sympathetically restored and re-furnished. The name arises from the Germanic ''hlaeri'' which signifies terrain seen as wooded and marshy. It is possible to speculate that the village originated in serving the castle, which in turn, guarded the river approach to Ghent from the sea. Telex (band)
Telex was a Belgian synthpop group formed in 1978 by Marc Moulin, Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers, with the intention of "making something really European, different from rock, without guitar — and the idea was electronic music". History In 1979, mixing the aesthetics of disco, punk and experimental electronic music, they released a stripped-down synthesized cover version of "Twist à St. Tropez" by Les Chats Sauvages. They followed up with an ultra-slow cover of " Rock Around the Clock", a relaxed and dispassionate version of Plastic Bertrand's punk song " Ça Plane Pour Moi", and a mechanical cover of " Dance to the Music", originally by Sly Stone. Telex built its music entirely from electronic instruments, employing joyously irreverent humor. Belgium was represented by Dutch singer Stella Maessen (billed simply as Stella), with the song "Si tu aimes ma musique", at the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Harrogate, England on 24 April. This was Stella's third appearance at Eurovision: She had appeared twice as part of the group Hearts of Soul/Dream Express for the Netherlands in 1970 and for Belgium in 1977. As a solo singer, she had also taken part in the Belgian preselection in 1981. Before Eurovision Eurosong ''Eurosong'' consisted of three heats, a semi-final, and the final on 21 February 1982. Stella Maessen (born 6 August 1953 in Zandvoort, North Holland) is a Dutch singer, best known for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1970, 1977 and 1982. Hearts of Soul In 1969 Maessen and her older sisters Patricia and Bianca formed a group, calling themselves Hearts of Soul. Following several single releases, and a No. 11 chart hit with "Fat Jack", they took part in the 1970 Dutch Eurovision selection, where their song " Waterman" ("Aquarius") earned a narrow victory, qualifying them for the 15th Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 21 March on home ground in Amsterdam. Technically, groups of more than two singers were still barred from Eurovision at that time, so to get around this they billed themselves as 'Patricia and the Hearts of Soul', implying that Stella and Bianca were backing singers to Patricia's lead. "Euro-Vision" () was the entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980, performed in French by Telex. The song was performed nineteenth on the night, following 's Trigo Limpio with "Quédate esta noche". At the close of voting, it had received 14 points, placing 17th in a field of 19. The band were moderately pleased with the outcome of the contest, but for a somewhat unusual reason: at the time lead singer was quoted as saying: "We had hoped to finish last, but Portugal decided otherwise. We got ten points from them and finished on the 19th spot". In hindsight their participation in the Contest however seems to have served its marketing purposes; some thirty years on "Euro-Vision" remains one of the band's best-known songs, both in Belgium and internationally.
