Susan Monarez
Susan P. Coller Monarez (born 1974/1975) is an American health scientist who is Principal Deputy Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2025. She is currently also serving as the Acting Director of the CDC. She was previously Deputy Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. Education Monarez completed her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2003, where her research focused on developing technologies to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases, particularly those affecting low- and middle-income countries. Her dissertation explored how trypanosome Gastric inhibitory polypeptide, GIP-SVSG regulates macrophages during ''Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense'' infection. Monarez was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University School of Medicine, continuing her work in the field of infectious disease research. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the National public health institutes, national public health agency of the United States. It is a Federal agencies of the United States, United States federal agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The CDC's current nominee for director is Susan Monarez. She became acting director on January 23, 2025, but stepped down on March 24, 2025 when nominated for the director position. On May 14, 2025, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that lawyer Matthew Buzzelli is acting CDC director. However, the CDC web site does not state the acting director's name.
