Surat (Gujarati Language, Gujarati: ) is a city in the western Indian States and territories of India, state of Gujarat. The word Surat directly translates to ''face'' in Urdu, Gujarati language, Gujarati and Hindi. Located on the banks of the river Tapti near its confluence with the Arabian Sea, it used to be a large seaport. It is now the commercial and economic centre of South Gujarat, and one of the largest urban areas of western India. It has well-established diamond and textile industry, and is a major supply centre for apparels and accessories. About 90% of the world's diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. Surat Diamond Bourse
Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) is a diamond trade centre located in DREAM City, Surat, Gujarat, India, designed by the architecture firm Morphogenesis. It is the world's largest diamond trading hub with a floor space of , as well as the world's largest office building. The current Chairman is Govind Dholakia and CEO of Surat Diamond Bourse is Mahesh Gadhavi. Surat Airport
Surat Airport is an international airport serving Surat, Gujarat, India. It is located in Magdalla, situated 12 km (6.4 mi) from the city centre. It has a total area of 770 acres (312 ha) and is the second busiest airport in Gujarat after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, in terms of both aircraft movements and passenger traffic. It was awarded the status of a customs airport on 9 June 2018, and the cabinet approved the international status on 15 December 2023. Science Centre, Surat
Science Centre, Surat is a multi-facility complex in Surat, Gujarat, India built by the Surat Municipal Corporation in 2009, the first of its type in western India. The complex houses a Science Centre, museum, an art gallery, an auditorium, an Amphitheatre and a planetarium. It has been designed by Ahmedabad-based architectural firm, HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. The Complex The complex covers a total area of 21,800 sq. m. and was built at the cost of 50.24 crores. It has underground parking facility for 112 four-wheelers and 210 two-wheelers. The Mayor of Surat is the first citizen of the Indian city of Surat and is the head of the Surat Municipal Corporation. He is also the presiding authority of the General Board of the SMC. The Mayor is elected from among the elected councilors in its first meeting after elections. The position is currently held by Daxesh Mavani of the BJP. Election The General Body of the SMC is formed by the elected members from each ward. There are 38 wards under the jurisdiction of SMC, which elect a total of 114 councilors. Tapti River
The Tapti River (or Tapi) is a river in central India located to the south of the Narmada river that flows westwards before draining into the Arabian Sea. The river has a length of around and flows through the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. It flows through the city of Surat, in Gujarat, and is crossed by the Magdalla, ONGC Bridge. On 7 August 1968, before the construction of the Ukai Dam to bring its waters under control and provide hydroelectric power, the Tapti River overflowed its banks during heavy rains in the monsoon season. More than 1,000 people drowned in the flood, and the city of Surat was submerged beneath 10 feet of water for several days. After the floodwaters receded, at least 1,000 more people died in Gujarat during a cholera epidemic from the contamination of the drinking water.
