The Stanley Hotel (currently called the Sarova Stanley) is a five-star hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the first luxury hotel in Nairobi, having been established in 1902 by English businesswoman Mayence Bent, when the city was a railway halt. It is named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh explorer who is best known for his explorations of central Africa and his successful search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Since the early 1900s, the Stanley Hotel has been known as the traditional meeting place for those going on safari in Kenya. It has played host to royalty, politicians, movie stars, and authors. Stanley is a geographic parish in York County, New Brunswick, Canada. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, for governance purposes it was divided between the village of Stanley, the incorporated rural community of Upper Miramichi, and the local service district of the parish of Stanley. Upper Miramichi was a member of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission (GMRSC), the others of Capital Region Service Commission (RSC11). Origin of name The parish takes its name from the settlement of Stanley, in turn named for Lord Stanley, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies at the time and an early supporter of the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company that promoted settlement of the area. Stanley, New Brunswick
Stanley is a former village in York County, in the Canadian province of New Brunswick; it was an incorporated village until the end of 2022 and is now part of the rural community of Nashwaak. History Stanley straddles the Nashwaak River 30 km north of Fredericton at the intersection of Route 107 and Route 620. The area was colonized in 1833 when a group associated with the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company became interested in the area. Early impressions of the land were not positive, with surveyors noting the rocky soil as one problem. The general remoteness of the location was also a problem. Initial immigrants to Stanley arrived in three waves. The first was young children and teens from London. The second was farmers and tradesmen from the Eastern Borders of Scotland and England. Stanley is a rural municipality (RM) in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. It is located in the southern part of the province, along its border with the state of North Dakota in the United States. Since 1876, the area made up part of the Mennonite West Reserve. The municipality has a population of 8,969 as of the 2016 Canada Census. The cities of Winkler and Morden lie geographically within the municipality but are separate urban municipalities. Stanley was a gold rush town in the Cariboo region of British Columbia that began during the Cariboo Gold Rush. History Gold was found in nearby Lightning Creek in 1861 resulting in the towns of Stanley and Van Winkle springing up as part of the Cariboo Gold Rush. Stanley is located in the Cariboo region of British Columbia’s central interior. Stanley can be found by following Highway 26 east from the city of Quesnel. A 45-minute drive along Highway 26 passes by the appropriately named Stanley Road on which the town of Stanley was located. Stanley once had a sprawling population that surpassed the town of Barkerville at one time due to the gold in the area. The Stanley River is a perennial river in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. A major tributary of the Brisbane River, the Stanley River valley extends roughly westwards from the area south of Maleny, through Woodford to Kilcoy before veering southwards. Course and features Formed by runoff from the Jimna, Conondale, Bellthorpe and D'Aguilar ranges, the river rises west of in the hinterland surrounding the Sunshine Coast and flows generally southwest, joined by eighteen minor tributaries before being impounded by the Somerset Dam built upstream from its confluence with the Brisbane River. Stanley is a town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is the second-last major township on the north-west coast when one travels west from Devonport, the larger township in the Circular Head municipality being Smithton. Employees of the company from England settled in the area in October 1826.
