Rural Municipality Of Stanley
Stanley is a rural municipality (RM) in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. It is located in the southern part of the province, along its border with the state of North Dakota in the United States. Since 1876, the area made up part of the Mennonite West Reserve. The municipality has a population of 8,969 as of the 2016 Canada Census. The cities of Winkler and Morden lie geographically within the municipality but are separate urban municipalities. Etymology The municipality is named for The Lord Stanley of Preston, 16th Earl of Derby, Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, namesake for the Stanley Cup, which he donated. This does not include the areas belonging to the cities of Winkler and Morden, which are surrounded by the RM, in its north-eastern and northern sections, respectively. A Rural municipality (Canada), rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Manitoba. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the Canada 2016 Census, 2016 Census. This is a decrease from 116 RMs prior to January 1, 2015, when municipalities with less than 1,000 people were Manitoba municipal amalgamations, 2015, directed by the provincial government to amalgamate with adjoining municipalities to comply with the ''Municipal Act''. West Reserve
The West Reserve was a block settlement plot of land in Manitoba set aside by the Government of Canada exclusively for settlement by Russian Mennonite settlers in 1875. Today, the former West Reserve exists in what is now the Rural Municipalities of Rhineland and Stanley, in the Pembina Valley Region. History After signing Treaty 1 with the Anishinabe and Swampy Cree First Nations, the Canadian government sent William Hespeler to recruit Mennonite farmers to the region. The Stanley Cup () is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion.
