Slocan Valley
The Slocan Valley is a valley in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Geographical boundaries The Slocan Valley is about long, but its width is undefined. The Valhalla Range provides the steep western boundary and the Slocan Range presents the gradual slopes of the eastern boundary. Squeezed in between, Slocan Lake occupies the north, and Slocan River the south. In the Selkirk Mountains, which were created 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period, the valley forms part of the long Kootenay Arc, comprising sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic rock. The earliest recorded use of the descriptor Slocan valley was 1891, and capitalized use was 1897. The name is not recognized officially by the BC Geographic Names office. The exact geographic boundaries are ill-defined, being either greater or smaller than the drainages of Slocan Lake and the Slocan River. Three Forks, British Columbia
Three Forks is a ghost town at the junction of Carpenter, Seaton, and Kane creeks in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. This former mining community, on BC Highway 31A, is by road about east of New Denver and west of Kaslo. Strategic location Well positioned as a stopover for horse packtrains carrying ore from the surrounding mines to New Denver, a number of entrepreneurs attempted to secure this land but each failed. In October 1891, John A. Watson sought . Later that year, Billy Lynch laid out a townsite. In January 1892, Eli Carpenter filed his notice for the same ground, but by that time the government had reserved all Crown land within ten miles of Slocan Lake for agricultural purposes. In June 1892, Charles Hugonin and Eric Conway Carpenter preempted for agriculture, but instead erected a hotel. Having leased out the venture, the pair built a further hotel the next year. Cody, British Columbia
Cody is at the confluence of Cody Creek into Carpenter Creek in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The ghost town, about one kilometre east of Sandon, lies off BC Highway 31A. By road, the former mining community is about east of New Denver and west of Kaslo. Name origin Cody Creek was named after prospector Henry Cody, the discoverer. The earliest newspaper mention of the creek was June 1892 and the townsite (initially called Cody Creek) was February 1895. However, the latter was not surveyed until June 1896. Apart from the creek and townsite, Henry is honoured in the naming of Mount Cody, Cody Caves, and Cody Caves Provincial Park. Mining During the 1892/93 winter, ore travelled over the Cody Creek–Kaslo sleigh road. In late 1892, the contractor building a wagon road along this route abandoned the half-completed project. Valhalla Provincial Park
Valhalla Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. It was established on March 3, 1983, in the mountains above the Western shores of Slocan Lake, in the west Kootenays. The park consists of most of the Valhalla Ranges of the Selkirk Mountains. Geography It is 49,893 hectares in size with of shoreline along Slocan Lake. Rosebery, British Columbia
Rosebery is an unincorporated community about north of New Denver in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and ferry terminal is at the mouth of Wilson Creek on the eastern shore of Slocan Lake. The locality, on BC Highway 6, is about by road north of Castlegar and by road and ferry south of Revelstoke. Name origin Wilson Creek, the former name, came from the creek flowing through the hamlet. The naming honoured either John Wilson, a resident until about 1902, or Arthur M. Wilson, the Slocan's first justice of the peace, who staked land at the creek in 1891, and left in the late 1890s. The Slocan Trading and Navigation Co. (ST&N) steamboat ''Wm.
