Skorpa, Troms
or is an uninhabited island in Kvænangen Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The island is located in the middle of the Kvænangen fjord, south of the island of Spildra. The last permanent resident of the island moved off the island around 1980, and the island has had no permanent inhabitants since then. It is only accessible by boat. History The island was the historical center of the municipality of Kvænangen. The municipal government and Skorpa Church were located on the island. The Skorpa prisoner of war camp was located on the island during World War II. The municipal government moved to Burfjord on the mainland during the 20th century and the island's population continued to decline until around 1980, when the island became uninhabited. Kvænangen (fjord)
, , or (sometimes anglicized as the ''Kvænang Fjord'') is a fjord in Troms county, Norway. The fjord runs through Skjervøy Municipality and Kvænangen Municipality. Geography The long fjord stretches from the Norwegian Sea to the village of Kvænangsbotn. The Reisafjorden is a large fjord which branches off the Kvænangen fjord to the west and the Badderfjorden branches off to the east. The European route E06 highway crosses the fjord on the Sørstraumen Bridge where the fjord is only about wide, just west of the village of Sekkemo. There are a number of islands in the fjord. On the west side of the fjord are the islands of Arnøya, Laukøya, Skjervøya, and Kågen. The smaller islands of Haukøya, Rødøya, Skorpa, Nøklan, and Spildra are located in the middle of the fjord. Skorpa Church
Skorpa Church () is a historic parish church of the Church of Norway in Kvænangen Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is located on the small island of Skorpa. It used to be the church for the Kvænangen parish which is part of the Nord-Troms prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1850 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 300 people. In 1956, the church was taken out of regular use when the new Sekkemo Church was completed on the mainland. History A chapel was built on the island of Skorpa in 1795. It may not have been the first chapel on Skorpa, but there is little known before that time. Skorpa prisoner of war camp () was a facility built by the 6th Division (Norway), Norwegian 6th Division to hold German Prisoner of war, prisoners of war during the 1940 Norwegian Campaign of the World War II, Second World War. Skorpa was the main PoW camp in Northern Norway and held around 500 civilian and military prisoners when it was shut down at the end of the Norwegian Campaign.
