Floorball
Floorball is a type of floor hockey with five players and a goalkeeper in each team. Men and women play indoors with sticks and a plastic ball with holes. Matches are played in three twenty-minute periods. The sport of bandy also played a role in the game's development. The game was invented in Sweden in the late 1960s. The basic rules were established in 1979 when the first floorball club in the world, Sala IBK, from Sala, was founded in Sweden. Official rules for matches were first written down in 1981. The sport is organized internationally by the International Floorball Federation (IFF). As of 2019, there were about 377,000 registered floorball players worldwide, up from around 300,000 in 2014. Events include an annual Champions Cup, EuroFloorball Cup and EuroFloorball Challenge for club teams and the biennial World Floorball Championships with separate divisions for men and women. Skellefteå (, locally ) is a city in Västerbotten County, Sweden. It is the seat of Skellefteå Municipality, which had 73,246 inhabitants in 2021. The city is historically industrial, with mining being a large part of that industry, especially for gold, leading to the city being nicknamed ''Guldstaden'' ("gold town"). Politically, Skellefteå is a Social Democratic stronghold. Swedish Super League ( sv, Svenska Superligan; formerly named ''Elitserien'') is the highest league in the league system of Swedish women's floorball and comprises the top 14 Swedish floorball teams. The first season began in 1997–98. The season ends with the playoffs and a final. History The Elitserien for women was founded in 1997 and replaced the Division 1 leagues as the high level floorball league of Sweden. Between the seasons 1997–98 and 2005–06 the league was divided into a northern and a southern group. Since the 2006–07 season, it is a national league.
