Floorball
Floorball (also known by other names) is a sport played with five players and a goalkeeper in each team. It is played indoors with sticks and a hollow plastic ball with holes. Matches are played in three periods. The sport of bandy also played a role in the game's development. The game was invented in Sweden in the late 1960s. The basic rules were established in 1979 when the first floorball club in the world, Sala IBK, from Sala, was founded in Sweden. Official rules for matches were first written down in 1981. The sport is organized internationally by the International Floorball Federation (IFF). As of 2019, there were about 377,000 registered floorball players worldwide, up from around 300,000 in 2014. Events include an annual Champions Cup, EuroFloorball Cup and EuroFloorball Challenge for club teams and the biennial World Floorball Championships with separate divisions for men and women. EuroFloorball Cup
The Champions Cup is floorball tournament organized by the International Floorball Federation for the best clubs from the top four countries according to IFF World Ranking. Since 2019, those are Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland and Switzerland, both for men and women. The tournament culminates every year in January both for men's and women's teams, that won in the previous season in their national league and cup competitions. That means, there are eight men's and eight women's teams in the tournament in total. In various formats, the tournament took place 30 times, the last time in 2025. The first tournament was played in 1993. The new format with eight teams is used since 2024. Swedes won most titles, 24 in men's and 25 in women's tournaments. Among the teams, Sweden's IBF Falun are the most successful with five wins in the men's category and IKSU with seven in the women's. The International Floorball Federation (IFF) is the worldwide governing body for the sport of floorball. It was founded on 12 April 1986 in Huskvarna, Sweden, by representatives from the national floorball associations of Finland, Sweden and Switzerland. It is based in Helsinki, Finland. The president of the federation is Filip Šuman. The federation became a member of Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) in 2000. It is recognized by the International Olympic Committee, IOC and is an ordinary member of the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations, ARISF since 2008. Superliga florbalu (also Livesport Superliga) is the highest league in the league system of Czech Republic, Czech men's floorball and comprises the top 14 Czech floorball teams. The season culminates in a play-off played by the best ten teams. The first season began in 1993–94. The champion of the league is eligible to compete at the Champions Cup (floorball), Champions Cup. World Floorball Championships
The Men's World Floorball Championship is an international floorball competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the International Floorball Federation (IFF). It is held regularly in even years since 1996. In off years, the women's championship is played. The tournament takes place in December. The reigning champions are Finland, who won their fifth title at the 2024 tournament in Sweden. The most successful country is Sweden, with 10 wins, the last in 2022, and participation in every final so far. The other medalists are the Czech Republic with two silvers from 2022 and 2004, Switzerland with one from 1998 and Norway with one bronze from 1996. Unihockey Prime League Men (also known as Lidl Unihockey Prime League Men due to sponsorship, abbreviated as L-UPL Men) is the top men's floorball league in Switzerland. The league consists of 12 teams. It was first played in the 1983–84 season. The champion of the league is eligible to compete at the Champions Cup. The lower league is National League B. The league was founded as Salibandyn naisten SM-sarja ( English: ''Women's Floorball Finnish Championship'') in 1988 by the Finnish Floorball Federation (SSBL). The F-liiga is the top men's floorball league in Finland. The league was founded in 1986 by the Finnish Floorball Federation (SSBL). The league consists of 12 teams. The champion of the league is eligible to compete at the Champions Cup (floorball), Champions Cup. The most successful team in the league is SSV (now EräViikingit), with eleven titles, most recently winning in 2011. The current champion from the 2024–25 season is the Esport Oilers, Oilers, who claimed their sixth title. The United States Floorball Association (USFbA) is the highest governing body for floorball in the United States of America. The USFbA is a self-governed organization, recognized by both state and federal governments. It is based in Incline Village, NV. Organization The USFbA is divided into 14 regional branches. Each regional branch has a director who is in charge of floorball for that region. The USFbA has been a member of the International Floorball Federation (IFF) since 1993. As of June 30, 2008, there are 920 registered floorball players in the US, which is one-and-a-half times the total of registered players in 2007.
