Sir Samuel Griffith
Sir Samuel Walker Griffith (21 June 1845 – 9 August 1920) was an Australian judge and politician who served as the inaugural Chief Justice of Australia, in office from 1903 to 1919. He also served a term as Chief Justice of Queensland and two terms as Premier of Queensland, and played a key role in the drafting of the Australian Constitution. Griffith was born in Wales arriving in the Moreton Bay district of New South Wales (but now in the state of Queensland) at the age of eight. He attended the University of Sydney, and after further legal training was called to the bar in 1867. Griffith was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in 1872. He served as Attorney-General of Queensland, Attorney-General from 1874 to 1878, and subsequently became the leader of the parliament's Liberalism in Australia, liberal faction. Oxley was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History This one-member electorate was created in the redistribution of 1872 (taking effect at the 1873 elections) from the electoral district of East Moreton. It covered from Toowong to Enoggera to Goodna, including Yeronga and Kurilpa. In 1888, the part north of the Brisbane River was separated into the electoral district of Toowong, while Oxley extended south to Browns Plains and Woodridge. Mary Harriett Griffith
Mary Harriett Griffith (1849–1930) was a philanthropist in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She was prominent in organisations promoting Christianity and the interests of women and children. Early life Mary Harriet Griffith was born on 4 November 1849 in Portishead, Somerset, England, to Rev. Edward Griffith and Mary, née Walker. She was only four years old when the family moved to Australia in the small sailing ship ''Nile''. The voyage from Sydney to Brisbane was made on the little coaster steamer, ''City of Melbourne.'' Toowong Cemetery
Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. William Fryar
William Fryar (25 January 1828 – 22 December 1912) was an early Australian surveyor, politician, businessman and mining inspector in Queensland, Australia. Biography Fryar was born on 25 January 1828 at Willington, Northumberland, England, the son of Thomas Fryar (mining engineer), and his wife Mary Ann, née Scott. He immigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1853. At intervals between 1864 and 1882, Fryar worked in the Lands Department as a licensed surveyor in the south-eastern regions of Maroochy and Mooloolah. In 1869, Fryar went into partnership with James Strachan and established the first sugar mill on the river at Loganholme. This was initially a very successful business that employed up to 100 men at crushing time.
