Scunthorpe Scorpions
The Scunthorpe Scorpions are a motorcycle speedway team in the British SGB Championship. They have raced at various times since 1971, at three different venues. History Origins and 1970s Speedway in Scunthorpe began on 3 May 1971 at the Quibell Park Stadium (an athletics stadium and velodrome). The inaugural season consisted primarily of a team known as the Scunthorpe Saints, who raced a series of challenge meetings at the stadium. The following year in 1972, the team joined the British league system, when they competed in the 1972 British League Division Two season but finished bottom of the table. Changes were made for 1973, with promoter Brian Osborn bringing in multiple new signings including Ken McKinlay. The Saints continued to race in the second tier of British speedway, which from 1975 was known as the National League. Luke Bernard Harris (born 4 March 2005) is a professional association football, footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for club Fulham F.C., Fulham. Ashby Ville Stadium
Ashby Ville Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, owned by North Lincolnshire Council and primarily used for motorcycle speedway and stock car racing. History During the 1978 National League season, the Scunthorpe Saints speedway team were told to vacate the Quibell Park Stadium by North Lincolnshire Council. Ongoing issues surrounding the track and conflict with the athletics club had led to the speedway promoter Brian Osborn looking for a new home even before being evicted. Osborn brought in fellow promoters Ted Hornsby and Jim Streets to help with the transition. The search for a new site for the 1979 season ended when the North Lincolnshire Council agreed to the building of a stadium on a seven-acre area of land in the south east of Scunthorpe, near the cooling towers of the steelworks. Ken McKinlay
John Robert Vickers (Ken) McKinlay (7 June 1928 – 9 February 2003) was a British international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 23 caps for the Scotland national speedway team, 92 caps for the England national speedway team and 23 caps for the Great Britain team. 1972 British League Division Two Season
The 1972 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The league still consisted of 17 teams with two teams leaving the league and two teams entering. The Rochdale Hornets had disbanded for good at the end of the previous season, whilst Ipswich Witches moved up to the British League. Two newly created teams Ellesmere Port Gunners and Scunthorpe Saints joined the league. The Romford Bombers promotion and team moved to the West Ham Stadium replacing the defunct West Ham Hammers at the stadium but halfway through the season, they moved again to become Barrow Happy Faces as their sponsor at the time was Duckhams Oil - its happy face logo was prominently displayed on the team's race jackets. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Each tier of British Speedway has its own respective Knockout Cup.
